Heat sign D Zach McKelvie to AHL deal

The Abbotsford Heat announced today the signing of free agent defenceman Zach McKelvie to a one year American Hockey League Standard Player Contract.

McKelvie, a native of New Brighton, Minnesota, attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and was named the NCAA's (Atlantic Hockey Conference) ‘Best Defensive Defenseman' during the 2007-08 season while playing with the Army Black Knights. McKelvie also was named to the First All-Star Team in the Atlantic Hockey Conference during 2007-08.

This is a really interesting signing. He missed all of the 2009-10 & 2010-11 seasons because he was on active duty in the US military.

I think he had signed even before then, in the article I posted they talk about him trying to get out of active duty early because of his contract, but he couldn't.
