In the late 1990s and early 2000s I spent every Christmas Day in Chinatown watching NBA and having some drinks. It started as a place to go since I was alone and it was the only thing open. It then turned out to be a tradition. Over the years more restaurants and pubs started opening. The Keg on Macleod Trail near Chinook became a place of refuge for restaurant industry staff. I haven't been there in a while, but it's been open every December 25th I driven by in the evening.
Most hotels also have restaurants open as well. I usually went to the Sheraton in Eau Claire since I worked there at one time.

There has been a recent tradition in Regina, indirectly inspired by me, to have night clubs open on Christmas night.
It is now their busiest day of the year. And really, it makes a lot of sense. Young people don't always hang out with their families and party at home. My family is a perfect example because we eat at 2pm, no one in my family drinks and they all like to go to bed at 9pm. Get together with all my cousins and head to the club for the evening.
I wish something like that would catch on here. It is such a blast to go out on a boring christmas night. In fact maybe it already has and I just don't know about it.
In 2000, I was doing laundry on Christmas Eve and ran out of soap. I went to both Co-op and Safeway, but they were already closed, so I ended up at the Shoppers in Chinook, which was one of the only 24/7 Shoppers in the city at the time. It was like a post-zombie apocalypse world in there.
They announced over the PA that they were out of Scotch tape, and I thought there was going to be a riot.
