Creator of Ultima Online, Richard Garriott's new game
I'd like to say he is doing it because he enjoys it... but something tells me it is all about the money.

Legendary Ultima designer Richard Garriott has finally unveiled Portalarium’s latest project, which he once described as an “Ultima-style game for the social space“.
It’s a Facebook game about going to garage sales.

I guess I shouldn't hold my breath for UO2...

Scoff if you want, but if Farmville has shown us anything, it's that a good social game layer will make people play anything.
I'm sad that Garriot is known primarily for Ultima Online.

Ultima V was one of my favourite games on Commodore 64. I've been playing IV this fall but I haven't been able to finish it yet. My plan is to play IV-VII, all of which are on GoG.com.
As for "social games", they're more like psychological experiments on reward-response engineering. They're not designed as games as such, they're just designed to hook you.

Found another interesting read by Garriot that I hadn't seen before.. not sure how old it is... but some great points in there.

Since I am no longer at the helm of UO, let’s look at where it has gone in my absence. Elves and ninjas have been added into the game, things I specifically had banned. This is only a small example of why and how Ultima has drifted away from Richard Garriott, but I have not drifted away from Ultima. Overused, irrelevant & reused RPG elements are not the essence of my Ultimate RPG.

And for the record, my Ultima fame started with 3, and I was an avid fan of the Ultima series, which is why I was so passionate about UO when it was released. I don't remember him JUST for UO, but if you are linking online social games with any of his games, the one that makes the most sense is the one that was actually played online..

Hah!
Ultimas 4-7.5 were incredible. The worlds in TES are the only worlds that can even be compared, imo.
I even liked Ultima 8.
Too bad there was no Ultima 9...

I enjoyed TR! And I was a dyed in the wool UO fan, even though my characters were never that successful.

I'm 24 and grew up playing Ultima games, 6 through 8 were unbeleivable. My older brothers always had our computer setup with good, new games. Also played a few years of UO, probably still have a good account floating around in space if it hasn't been deleted from the database.

Garriot is alerady rich. He sued the Korean MMO maker who hired him last for how he was released and he he wasn't able to sell his shares promptly causing him to lose a few million.
He won that case.

Hrmm ok this story unfolds. Garriot claims he talked with them previously after EA comes out and says the below is false.
Quote:
"We've actually talked to Electronic Arts about it," Garriott told Eurogamer. "I would love to have access to the Ultima property. We've had discussions at very high levels with Electronic Arts about access to the property."

"I'm not sure what Richard Garriott is referring to," Jeff Brown, EA's head of corporate communications, told IndustryGamers. "But no one at EA is discussing partnership or licensing opportunities related to the Ultima Online franchise."
