Default Downloading a Scanning Program

I have a Brother MFC-6800 printer/scanner/fax that doesn't scan to pdf. I need to scan to pdf. Can someone please tell me where I can get a (free) program to do this?

Why not grab CutePDF, which installs as a free print-to-PDF printer driver. Then, any app that can print can print to PDF. Works great - we use it all the time at work.

I need to write documents on MS Word and then print them, and then scan them to pdf. Or somehow get what I've written into an unalterable document (pdf) and become emailable.
Am I understanding you correctly that this CutePDF will "print" an MS Word document into a pdf, but not actually print it, just convert it and put it on my desktop or in a file?

Absolutely - after installing CutePDF, fire up Word, and when you go to print, select the CutePDF printer instead of your Brother. It'll pop up a dialog asking where you want to save the PDF, and bob's your uncle.
