Default 1940's New York Photos in Colour

A recent discovery of some vintage photos on NYC in colour.
Quote:
It’s been 70 years since an Indiana photographer visited New York City and returned home with an amazing collection of holiday snaps.

But Charles Weever Cushman’s pictures are even more impressive today, as they were taken on pricey colour Kodachrome and look far more recent than they actually are.

He went around the city taking photos of architecture such as the Brooklyn Bridge and other parts of the Manhattan skyline - and it’s hard to believe they were taken while World War Two was going on.

We saw these a few months ago, but always a pleasure to see them again, as they are downright awesome.

What always amazes me about these photos is how much pride everyone takes in their appearance. All the men look gentlemanly, no matter what their social standing or class. We're all a bunch of bums in comparison.

Also, zero fat people.

Those are pretty cool. I always find it weird to see time prior to the 1960s in colour.

I loved how all the guys wore hats back then, and even the homeless guys were dressed up.

Haha, true enough.

I heard a story of a guy who went there and had no idea that they just sold beer and asked for a martini. The bartender just looked at him blankly and said "light or dark".

Speak for yourself! I wear a suit and tie everyday to work.

I do get your point though, everyone in general looked quite sharp.

The lower manhattan skyline in this era was the most beautiful of all time. Even though it is larger now, overall it looks worse (rare for a skyline).

I agree. That's just a magnificent skyline, especially for its time. NYC has been epic for a long, long time.

This is a cool thread. It's always interesting seeing classic pictures in color. I remember showing someone color pictures of WWII that I had found somewhere, and it got the person immediately interested in war history, and this person showed no interest whatsoever before that. Shows the power of color. Just seems to grab at you more and get you more emotionally attached.
