Default WWII in photos

A really cool collection of WWII images hosted on TheAtlantic.com
The series is updated every Sunday until Oct 30th.

http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/ww2.html

Quote:
In these photo essays, I hope to explore the events of the war, the people involved at the front and back home, and the effects the war had on everyday lives. The entries will follow a roughly chronological sequence, with some broader themes (such as "The Home Front") interspersed throughout. These images will give us glimpses into the real-life experiences of our parents, grandparents and great grandparents, moments that shaped the world as it is today. I hope to be able to do justice to this important story in this large-photo narrative format and invite you to join me for the next 20 Sundays.

I think he is thinking that it's a picture of Simo Häyhä who killed 505 Germans with his ironsights.

Oh crap, yeah, it is him based on an image archive of him.

He's was a true warrior even having half of his head blown off.

I think you meant that it was 505 Russians; Germany and Finland fought against Russia together at various stages of the war.

Imagine being that dude picking up chicks. "Yeah, I know that other guy over there is a doctor and I'm missing half my face, but, sweetheart, I killed 505 people. By myself. Wanna come home with me? Where do you think you're going? Don't walk away from me - what happened to the 505 others who did the same thing?"

That finnish sniper is a badass for sure. Apparently he had 200 kills with his sub machine gun also. Crazy.

I personally think every kid starting grade 7 should be shown and taught the last world wars to the fullest. Kids today just don't get the extent of human suffering that hatred and greed can bring. They also don't realize how lucky they really are.

I so agree with what your saying, I was shocked and disgusted when I visited the museum of the regiments here in Calgary and talked to the educational consultant there and I learned that they weren't teaching much in the way of Canadian or international war history in Calgary schools anymore, and that students usually got a one day course at the museum.

WW1 really defined our country as a independent country to our successes at Vimy Ridge. WW2 cemented Canada as a country to be recognized with out actions not only in the Atlantic Convoys and Juno Beach but our headlong invasion into Italy. Canada then swung above its weight in Korea, and Afghanistan.

But you can't understand the horrors of war unless you truly study it, you also need to learn that at time war though terrible is something that is sadly necessary.

Canada has never established itself through its diplomatic efforts, Peace Keeping though a Canadian creation, has ended up being an abject failure. But there are entire countries that are incredibly grateful for the Canadian's in helmets and boots that came with one hand reached out to offer help and aid and a sword in the other to defend human rights and dignity.

It needs to be taught, and understood and we can never forget that young men put down their plows and shovels and pens to do what they believed was the right thing.

"Thanked" you...but it just didn't feel sufficient.

I'm a military "brat", the son of a retired CWO.

I know Canada's war history inside and out; I contribute on a number of internet boards...

...the level of ignorance among many of the "young 'uns" (who pop up on those sites) is frankly...disheartening.

Thanks for your post, it made my day.

WTF? Is that guy with the moustache photo-shopped in? Also, how could he possibly convince himself that he is part of any kind of master race looking like that.

Thanks Military history does come in handy, I went to a U.S. university and decided to take some elective history courses. We had a professor that waxed poetically about the D Day invasion and the greatness of the American effort (which I can't argue with), so I asked some probing questions about the Canadian hand in D-Day to which the professor said it was fairly minimal, of course no insult intended.

So I fired back with a "While the you yanks were still on the beach pooping your pants and trying to figure out how to push forward, the Canadian's on Juno beach had already pushed in land securing key bridge heads and road intersection and how to get the beer trucks out of the sand. Yes Mr Professor, the Canadians pushed further and faster then any on the allied units, but thanks for not understanding D-Day."

That's what Call of Duty 1 through 3 were for.

I don't know how you can actually teach this. I strongly believe that most people don't have the proper perspective about life and human history and the real nature of suffering and this short-sighted view is one of the most harmful things in society in regard to the way people live their lives and behave toward one another and their perspective on social issues.
