playing Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight and the point where your actions in the game determine if you go to the dark side or the light. no cookie cutter choices like in the sequels, just the game keeping track if you were a nice guy or a dick. no other game has gotten that good/evil path down as well
the Mass Effect 2 intro, stepping onto the bridge of a half blown up ship and staring out into space. such an awesome way to start the game
the first encounter with a Cyberdemon in DOOM. that was almost a #### your pants moment
Fighting Mother Brain in Super Metroid. When you think you are kicking MB's behind, she uses hyper for the first time and you lose all your missiles and power bombs and you only have the plasma beam. As a 12-13 year old at the time, that was a scary moment but also one for the memories.
Also, playing classic DOOM in nightmare for the first time. Simply terrifying and epic.
I remember being on lunch in elementary school and everyone was watching one guy manage to win this...back in the day when Pokemon was relevant.
Civilization III's and Master of Orion II's victory cinematics mean a lot to me given the amount of time I've spent playing both those games (can't seem to find videos of either)
This also looks like it'll be on of my top trailers/opening videos as well...
Playing NHLPA for the first time on the Sega Genesis.
And the game Everquest got me thru college, lol. I was broke and it was cheap entertainment. So getting my monk epic was awesome, and the peak of that game for me was beating the Avatar of War.
I suggest that you put the *SPOILER* tag in the thread title as there are a few spoilers. Then again some of the games in here are pretty old and I'm not sure what the statute of limitations is on spoilers.

This was the happiest video game moment of my life. I had been calling video stores for days on end waiting for a copy to come in. I must have sounded so excited whn the guy said a copy was there because the guy at the store said he'd hold it for me, something nobody did back then.
The scene early-on in Portal 2 where GladOS is reassembling while Wheatley is carrying on, oblivious, is pretty epic.
I thought it was pretty epic when I found out what the white goo did...
So, this topic lends itself well to scripted single player events. But I think some of the best video game moments come in multiplayer.
Like anyone who is a a PC gamer, I played a lot of Counter-Strike (back in high school). I can still remember some epic rounds where I single-handedly killed 8-9 players on the other team. The nature of the game, where everyone dead is watching you dominate, makes it a pretty awesome when you pull it off.

I remember playing CAL-M matches where my entire team would die, and I'd successfully defend the bomb/kill their entire team myself
