Honestly, you should just buy yourself a decent charcoal suit. Renting is not worth it.

Listen to this man.
Buy a decent charcoal suit and you can wear it anywhere. Renting is going to cost you $150-200 anyway.
Do not buy black. Black is for formal events only. Charcoal is the way to go.

I think renting is a good idea...it's what I'm going to do from now on. I've bought two suits in my adult life - I wear them once, maybe twice before they look out of style.

Buy one. You don't have to spend a massive amount on one, but every man needs at least one decent suit. If you get a versatile enough suit you can wear it to weddings, funerals, job interviews, business meetings, and any other formal events you may end up at. Get a few decent shirt and tie combos and you can re-invent the same suit time after time.
Renting a suit doesn't make much sense to me. Unless you never go to another wedding or formal event of any kind.

Buying doesnt work for me as I am already going to splash out some cash the next time the Hong Kong tailor comes to town.
I figure as I am a guest at this wedding I want it to look better than a $200 suit - thats the hope/idea anyways.

I ordered suits for my wedding from this company. Price and quality were good and they arrived in 2 weeks.

Black is perfectly fine for casual wear / business wear.
What I don't understand is how there are men out there that don't even own a single suit of their own. It doesn't even have to be expensive to look nice or expensive. The last wedding I was at, I was a member of the wedding party and all the groomsmen had $80 suits from H&M that looked much more expensive and fashionable than their cost.

I'm currently wearing my grandpa's suits from the 1960s and early 80s. The cut looks stylish again now. I don't think 70s or 90s suits will ever come back though, thank god.

Undertakers and servants wear black.
The H&M option is actually a really great one for someone not looking to spend a lot on a suit but get something that is actually wearable. Of course, it's a wool-blend, fuse-job that won't last you more than a year, but from what I have heard, the fit is actually quite good.

Go buy a navy suit. I'm all about navy over charcoal. You can probably find a decent one on ebay for >$200. Just go to a tailor, get your measurements, and go hunting for brands like Samuelsohn, Coppley or Jack Victor. You might even be able to snag an Oxxford for a bit more.
Obviously some men spend more time and money on their clothes than others, but I do think it's important, as Hack&Lube said, for a man to own at least one decent suit of clothes.

Everyone should own a suit (not critizing the op here), but the best system is to own one dark and one light and then a bunch of shirts and ties that mix with both.
But the one suit theory is that you could get hit by a bus tommorrow and need to get buried, and its preferable to get buried in your own suit instead of a backless suit provided by the funeral home.

The most important thing about a suit is fit. A $1500 that is too large will look much worse than a $200 suit that fits great.
Suits need to be tailored. Off the rack suits are made baggy in order to fit as many people as possible. Tailoring is not only hemming the pants and sleeves, as moores would have you believe.
Find a suit that fits in the shoulders, and then take it to an actual tailor.
Indochino allows you to provide measurements to make a suit for you. A lot of times, this is much better than buying off the rack.
Black pants worn with a shirt for business casual, fine.
Black suit worn with any shirt is not acceptable business wear. Black is formal. Black is worn to weddings or funerals or dinner parties.
Charcoal or Navy blue are much more versatile suits than a black suit. Navy blue can be worn with basically anything. Can even do black or brown shoes and belt. Doesn't matter.

People who wear suits should own suits - people who don't wear suits don't need to own one. In my world, I need one never.

I don't attend formal events and have no need for a suit. If I have to dress up I'll wear nice pants with a nice shirt/tie combo. That's not hard to understand, is it?

If I die (so far, so good) then I will not have an open casket funeral. I will be cremated and placed in a 7-11 double gulp cup and then launched into the wilderness using a giant catapult.

Why is it hard to understand? Is it that hard for people to realize that there are people who live life differently than they do?
