Moving to Calgary...
Hi there, my girlfriend and I are moving to Calgary in early April and I want to know what some good local secrets are in Calgary. By that I mean what are really good "hidden" restaurants, barber shops, liquor stores, etc.? I thought CP would be a good place to ask. I am originally from a town near Ottawa and we have a Italian sandwich shop called DiRienzo's, which is a local favourite that not many people know about. So I am looking for places like it if there are any. Thanks!

For a nice romantic dinner that won't break the bank head to Rea's on Edmonton Trail and 32 Ave NE.
For awesome subs/pizza check out Varsity Pizza + Subs (used to be Tops).

Run by recent immigrants (possibly Lebanese); all they do is men's and boy's hair cuts. Nobody takes your name; you just sit down and look to see who is there ahead of you. Once all those people go- you are next.

Pho Kim, at 15 Ave and 1 St NW, both for 17a (beef brisket stew soup) and for the incredibly hot waitresses.........

- Not really a secret, but Loungeburger off of Macleod and 13th ave (?) right across from the Victoria Park LRT at the Saddledome. Good place to go before a game, really good burgers IMO.
- Something more higher end, The Ranche right in Fish Creek Park is a pretty cool place to go once in awhile. Very old school home that has been converted into a resteraunt. Scenery is awesome as you're right in the park with nothing else around and the food is pretty good as well. If you order an Elk steak or whatever it feels like someone's gonna be throwing on a parka, grabbing a rifle and heading out the back door to go find one in the park.
- Shawarma Station, off of 10th St in Kensington. Not to be confused with Shawarma King off Kensington Ave in Kensington... Delicious Shawarma's but be careful not to agree to everything that's upsold to you because they fail to mention the extra cost until it comes time to pay. And get used to a lot of "my friend, how are you today, my friend? what can I get for you today, my friend? Mixed Shawarma? My friend?? Mixed?? Mixed?! Mixed?!?!" and so forth..
At least you'll have a new friend right off the bat though

Everybody should go to Michael's Pizza at least once in my opinion, particularly if you're a Flames fan.

Haha Sam's upsells are classic, I don't even mind though, his food is awesome and so is his service, even with the heavy dose of "my friend, how about a more expensive option today my friend"

Yeah, maybe he should move to Waterloo. It's like Provence and Puerto Vallarta rolled into one small Canadian town.
