I recall watching an episode of mythbusters where they tested the dirtiness of various things. Shopping carts were one of the things tested, and they were near the bottom of the list in terms of dirtiness. Fecal coliforms can get pretty much everywhere, but almost always in quantities so small as to be completely harmless.
