The Super Bowl is a Waste of Time
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...055561406.html
Quote:
As many as 75 minutes, or about 60% of the total air time, excluding commercials, is spent on shots of players huddling, standing at the line of scrimmage or just generally milling about between snaps.
|
Two days, 12+ hours of broadcast time, 11 minutes of football.
Thrilling.

Poor article, players are not milling around between snaps, there are about a 1000 things happening between snaps from playcalling, strategizing, substitutions etc etc...
Each team has 10 coordinators doing their job during breaks.

The point is that there are 11 minutes of football. 11 minutes!

My point is when the ball is not moving and teams are figuring out what to do, that's football too, and very interesting.

You're so disinterested that you took the time to read an article about it and then post about it on a message board. That right there is pathetic.

This thread surprises me for two reasons.
First, is that the 11 minutes things isn't new. We've all known that there is only 10-12 minutes of actual action for years and years. Why bring it up right before the Superbowl?
Second, why are some people acting like the OP posted naked pics of their wives? Who cares if this guy doesn't like the NFL and posted an article about it? Is that a good reason to get your panties in a bunch?
Wait, none of that surprises me. This is the internet after all.

I'm as big a football fan as anyone, but America and the NFL love to make the superbowl bigger then life. If the game isn't close and you don't have a vested interest, it can be a little to much.

The superbowl is a great day to party, be with friends and family and be a part of something that only happens once a year.
Ill be wasting my time as well watching only for me, what happens after the whistle is just as exciting as what happens during actual play.

They expect tomorrows game to be the single most watched TV event in NA history....and it isnt all about the football either.
There is a segment of folks who watch exclusively for the commercials. Another bunch that will be attending a party just for the socialization aspect and likely even some that watch just so they can talk about it with everyone else the next day.
Its about so much more than a football game (tho that is my favorite part) it's an event.....but many just don't understand that.

I'm not arguing any of those points, I'm saying that the NFL always makes the Superbowl bigger then life, just like most American sports. The 2 weeks between games, the hours and hours of pre-game and the amount of useless crap put across the screen and discussed by the announcers can be a little to much and that a lot of Superbowls in the past, have not been close and or exciting games.
I'm not disagreeing with the sentiment of all different types of people watching this game and enjoying the little things that come with the Superbowl outside of the football itself, but I don't think that I'm going out on some radical idea, when I say that America and especially a station like Fox broadcasting this year, that it can be a bit too much.

I think your blame is mis-placed. The NFL doesnt do any of what you are saying except schedule the week off in between games...all the rest is done by the media.
And the reason? people eat it up and it makes the networks a fortune.
I understand why some get overloaded with it, but that's their own doing. There is always the whole "dont like it, dont watch it" thing...and to be honest I have avoided it a ton this week for the reason you suggest and because I have a vested interest this year.
As for FOX, I think they are FAR and away the best in the business when it comes to producing a football game.

That's really my point. I just thought I'd provide some perspective as every year the super bowl is blown way out of perspective. It's not just football fans getting excited over the biggest game of the year, it's all of the non-football followers that are getting excited over 11 minutes of mediocre football.
I just find the sheeple amusing.

Lol, I agree it's only 11 minutes, and I rarely watch football (and don't agree that football is even proper name for it). However, it's a good time out with friends, and over the course of the few hours you can chat a bunch. Also this year, it sounds like it should be a good matchup. Once again, i stay absent from threads about sports I don't give a damn about, and I don't start any either.

I agree with this.
Since I like both teams this year, I will be interested more than any SB since the Broncos beat Atlanta. I have not watched more SB's than I have watched. The hype is overwhelming.
It is what it is.
The SB is the best when Denver is playing and I would imagine most people feel that way about it (with their team inserted in Denver's place of course.)
