Default [Bump] Target to buy Zellers for 1.8 billion

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe...rticle1868308/

Frankly, it's about time. Zellers has been toiling away as a second tier discount store. Their customer service is terrible, their stores always seem dirty and they are brutally more expensive than wal-mart. If anything this should definitely bring some competition to the landscape.

I'm just surprised it took Target this long to make it's way to Canada. I would have thought they would have followed Walmart a long time ago.

Must say, I'm pretty happy about this - I love shopping at Target when I'm in the States.

I've never been to a Target before, is it comparable to a Walmart or a Kmart? Are they serious competition for Walmart in the States? I hope they are because Superstore isn't cutting it.

As someone who has never been in a Target but has friends who refer to it the way Catholics talk about the Vatican City... can someone explain to me what the big deal with Target is?

How is it different than a Walmart superstore/supercenter/superwhatevertheycallit ?

I too have never shopped at Target, but I'm guessing that it can't be any worse than Zellers. Sure, I buy my underwear there, but it really hasn't shown too many other reasons for existing over the years.

Walmart (to supplier): "how can you provide this $5 t-shirt cheaper to us?"

Target (to supplier): "How can you make this $5 t-shirt better?"

From my limited experience, that is how I view the two stores. They both provide a cheap t-shirt, but place their emphasis in drastically different ways.

It's not. It's the same crap at similar price points. How people can rave about Target over Walmart is beyond me. They are both horrible places.

Target has THE BEST selection of books and movies. It's 'cleaner' than Walmart, the aisles are spaced better, the store is more organized, and the merchandise is better quality. The clothing is better (if you're going to buy clothes at Target), and the Target 'name brand' stuff is very good quality, from their grocery section to their toy department. Also, the electronics are higher end and better quality. They always have the best layout when it comes to school supplies too, it's the only place I would even consider getting school supplies because everything is labeled, easy to find and spread out nicely. It's a higher end Walmart in a nutshell.

You can class-up Target by pronouncing it Tar-jsay.

If you are going to any of the mentioned stores for clothes other than underwear, you are either poor, or do not have a sense of style.

I always thought that the two stores were linked anyway. I seemed to find Cherokee brand stuff on sale at Target (which for whatever reason I always pronounce like Troutman said - I work with a girl from Michigan who says it that way as a joke and it seemed to have stuck).

Good news for the competition sector, only problem is now we won't be able to buy overpriced HBC Olympic crap at Zellers, going to have to stick to the Bay for that.

Any change is good change when it comes to Zellers, what a terrible store it has become.

- Expensive (relative to competition)
- Smells terrible (like a mix of old people food and poor people)
- Dreary Interiors
- Terrible Layouts
- Always dirty
- Did I mention the smell?

Oh wow you are calling people poor because they shop at walmart and target. Good for you buddy! Sorry I don't go to the Ed Hardy store and pick up sweet t's like you do! There is nothing wrong with buying clothes from these places. Why would I pay 100 dollars for a plain black sweater from some fancy store in the mall when I can pay 20 dollars for a plain black sweater that looks exactly the same.

Your logic is ######ed!

Walking in a Zellers feels like sadness and resignation.

You should see this sweet Ed Hardy T I got. It is unreal. Its got a dragon, but instead of fire, it has Ed Hardy T's coming out of it's nostrils. It's unreal. Also, it has a bunch of diamonds on it.

Target carries a lot of products that Zellers currently does, I wouldnt expect much change other than better pricing as they should be able to compete better with Wal-Mart.
