Pittsburgh trades Hornqvist to Florida for Mike Matheson and Colton Sceviour
Jimmy Rutherford not exactly having a summer to remember

That's not a good choice.

WTF. I would have loved to have Hornqvist here.
Huge win for FLA here.

I thought I read somewhere that Pittsburgh was looking to trade Hornqvist to clear cap space?
Matheson has a brutal contract. Six years remaining at $4.875 million. Barely less than Hornqvist at $5.3 million and twice as long. And Hornqvist is a substantially better player.

Great trade for the Panthers. You can't accuse Rutherford of standing still but I don't know how this makes the Penguins better.

Great deal for Florida on the surface. Hornqvist was a well respected guy in Pittsburgh. The players loved him.
I suppose Rutherford thinks Matheson can right his ship in Pittsburgh.

Yeah...I'm shocked that Florida was able to get out of that contract.
Matheson was played on the third pairing by Coach Q most of the season.

Ruh roh. Hornqvist might save Rutherford from himself here.

I’m confused as to what Pittsburgh is doing - if this goes through, more will have to happen.
LHD: Dumoulin, Pettersson, Johnson, Matheson, Riikola

It’s a weird trade for the Pens. Hasn’t Mattheson been brutal, especially for what he makes?

Penguins were able to rehabilitate Justin Schultz. Maybe they feel they can do the same with Matheson?

I'm actually shocked a team would take Matheson
That's one of the worst contracts in the league. Matheson was so bad in the exhibition game and play in round for Florida. I can't believe a team would trade for him, let alone trade a top 6 winger

Hörnqvist is 33 however, and three more years at that salary isn’t a good thing.
Matheson is pretty meh, though, and overpaid with a long contract that jumps into LTNC after this year.

It’s pretty cliche to call Matheson a bad dman. He has a great set of tools and skates like the wind. Try not to get caught up in all the fancy stats and consider what the players assets are.
I’d take MM over PH.

Rutherford is bad at trading for defencemen.

Agreed, Hornqvist's age and style of play make me wonder how long he lasts.
Matheson is the prototype for great tools, no toolbox. Just hasn't been able to think the game well at an NHL level, so he's often exposed defensively. I still think he has potential to be an offensive middle-pair d-man, and a good one too, but he took a major step back last year.
