I've been sitting on a mafia idea for a while, and I figure it's a good time to finally get it off the ground. Mafia veterans, don't worry about waiting to leave spots open for new players, as I'll work around the player count as needed.
This game will have an open format and not everyone will have special roles. You'll know exactly how many mafia and townspeople there will be, and you'll know what roles are in the game. You'll need to use your deduction skills to weed out who is telling the truth, and who slipped up and let out something they shouldn't have.
This is also an easier format for beginners to get involved with, as there's no crazy stuff happening in the background that can make it very difficult to discern who is what role and alignment.
If you're unaware of how forum mafia works, here is a quick primer on the basics:
The setup is basically that amongst the players are a majority of town dwellers (or "townies") and a minority of mafia (or "scum"). The town's objective is to figure out the identities of and kill all of the mafia in their midst, whereas the mafia's objective is to kill enough townies to eliminate their majority. Typically about 20% of the players are the scum.
The catch is that while the mafia know who each other are and can talk freely in private, the townies can only talk publicly in the thread and each one knows nothing more than their own role. This is what makes finding the mafia so exciting, as they will conspire to try and throw the town off track.
The game is split into days. Every day the players will vote to lynch someone, and by the end of the day the player with the most votes is lynched and their role revealed - they are then out of the game. However, if at any point during the day there is a voting majority for one person (e.g. 8 votes out of 14 people) the day will end immediately and they will be lynched. This is known as the 'hammer'.
After each day comes a night period, during which the mafia decide on an additional player to kill. They are removed from the game and the next day begins. Some special townies also have actions they may perform during the night - for example, the cop may investigate one player per night (and will be told if they are mafia or town) and the doctor may choose one player to protect from being killed that night. The identities of these players are not known by anyone other than the players themselves, which is good for them because otherwise they become clear targets for the mafia.

Finally, as an obscure hint to the theme, here's an appropriately named song for this thread:

Oh man, the way this game consumed me last time I really shouldn't but I will throw my name in. Someone has to save Timbo when he gets killed by an angry mob yet again.
