I've went to Nick's Pizza and Steakhouse twice now and left disappointed. Quality really seems to be dropping there. Last time it didn't even seem like there was any sauce on my pizza dough. I'll give it one more try and hope it was just a coincidence the previous two.

We quite like Nick's pizza, but find it is much better in the lounge than delivered.

This was in the lounge. I'm a big Nick's fan. Something isn't right there the last few times. No sauce once, skimpy on the toppings once, and the dough basically didn't rise once.

I haven't had Nick's pizza in a long time but I loved their pizza. Nick's previously had a little takeout kitchen on 14th Street SW and it was about 6 blocks from where we lived. Their mexican pizza was one of my favourites.

Visited Cassis Bistro for the first time on Sunday... fantastic! About $500 for 4, though that included 3 bottles of wine. The duck confit and the lamb confit (special) were very good. The desserts were superb. The only questionable item was the calamari stuffed with prosciutto - just too weird of a taste combination. Will return.

Another probable casualty of the recession. Always sorry to see choice get taken away, but that place was a prime candidate to get taken out. It was pricey, had some ok and some above average food, and was somewhat out of the way in Bridgeland.
I went to Carino Reserva last week and thank goodness that place is still a float. Toshi is a smart guy with great food, reasonable price, and great location in Mission. I hope places like this make it.
On the side how the eff is Char Bar still open?

Carino Reserva is incredible. Just go for the Duck Nanban. It's just amazing that there are all these restaurants around, but the flavour he pumping out of there is incredible.

I think Vlad has mentioned it before, but Prego in Eau Claire was very good last night:

So Paprika House doesn't have the most obvious location, but man is it ever a nice new place if you like Hungarian food. Their Hungarian style borscht is amazing too.
I just hope it sticks around as I walk by there all the time and had to have a friend point it out to me.

As someone who has been employed in the restaurant business, I can tell you Cat & Fiddle on 16th Ave NW was my favorite place to work ever. Many deals on wings, and daily specials. Was better when the Scottish owners ran things, but it still is ok. Worked at Original Joe's years ago, and it's a relaxing atmosphere. Staff made it pleasant, and place was fair.
Worked at National Restaurant. Horrible place to work. Overpriced food ($17 for a Chicken burger and fries???). Did not get breaks despite working 8 hour shifts. Constant pressure and harassment by managers.

Was Cat and Fiddle so good to work at because the servers ignored the customers and I can only assume hung out?
Literally the worst table service in town.

I haven't been to that place but another great option for Hungarian food is Jonas on 6th Ave. It is tiny and in an odd location but the food is stellar.

Cat and Fiddle has middling service, but what kills me there (which is a shame because it's a hangout for a some friends I don't see enough) is the watered down drinks. If you order anything with spirits in it, it's like 40% water, including shots.

Similarly, the number one thing I hate in a restaurant or pub are dirty beer lines that never get cleaned- essentially every beer just tastes the same- like crap. Ya, great that you want to have a bunch of beers on tap, but maybe just limit it to a few then and practice proper sanitation. The Calgary best pubs chain seems to be bad for this.

Yup. You can tell a pub doesn't clean their lines when you have two pints and the next day you feel like you had seven.

My mom wants to go for dinner tonight with me and my kids (ruining my plans for a nice quiet night in with homemade burgers for dinner) and she won't take no for an answer.
There isn't anywhere that I actually want to go for dinner at so does anyone have any good suggestions for dinner in the NW (Crowfoot/Varsity/16th Ave area)?
Maybe I can get her to go to Boogies and I can still enjoy a burger. I think she might be disappointed with that place though (she probably doesn't want a burger.)
