Neither of them wanted be in Canada. They are American born stars and had a miserable time here with COVID and family back home in the US.
None of that is Tre's fault haha
Just listen to how Tkachuk talks about Treliving now.

Was it covid though? It wasn't a happy time for anyone but truly was it covid or was it the city itself and it's proximity? Anyway, with Tkachuk's comments on Treliving I wouldn't put much into it. The guy says the right things for the camera, and he's at the top of living life right now and was asked that question. Of course he's happy with how it turned out. Treliving helped that. Treliving misplayed his cards when he should have cut them loose or signed them, simple as that. He acted in the best interests of the Flames and deserves no fault for that though. Good trade at the time, just bad outcome. The signing to an extension was painful though.

I think there was some talk that Covid impacted JG’s thinking and I dimly reall the same about Tkachuk.

So a once in a lifetime pandemic inpacted these guys that much? I don't buy it. Plus allergic restrictions went away when they hit free agency and the US had shut downs as well.
It wasn't like they got locked up in their homes.

I am willing to give Treliving a pass if it’s true that Jonny had changed his mind and it was Murray who told him to get lost.
But Tre should have locked up JG a year earlier when he wanted to sign long term.

It's what I heard from someone plus his agent wrote in his letter.
They came back the next day in free agency and wanted to come back but Edwards told him to eff off.

It reminded a lot of people that the U.S. and Canada are different countries, that the border can be shut down, and that they can be prevented from returning to the country all of their families live in. There’s no reason to believe Covid was a unique event that will never happen again. From reports, a lot of American NHLers felt the same way.

These guys are in their 20s and often not the brightest or deepest thinkers.
I actually think they both honestly told Treliving a deal would be done to extend at the end of the last contract. That includes Tkachuk. But events and life came at them and they changed their minds. Tkachuk’s contract that he received in 2019 looks a lot like what he would have gotten midway through a 7 year deal. So he and Treliving seem to have cut a deal which was possible at the time and laid the groundwork for the extension. And then Tkachuk didn’t extend.

Agreed, I don't think it is as cut and dried as they wanted to leave all along, I think it is more situational and reacting to circumstances as they change.

The idea that there was nothing to be done and it was inevitable is utterly foolish; some of you are saying that thus avoiding any critic of Treliving but if that's the case he should've traded Gaudreau long ago, and he should've traded Tkachuk well before he asked to be moved at the last second. If both were gone no matter what, Treliving messed up too.

Tkachuk never asked to be traded until Gaudreau bolted. It's obvious he was open to staying if this team was serious about contending. The idea of leaving entered his brain when Treliving gave him a deal that essentially walked him to UFA status.
He's average GM, at best. Good riddance.

The inclusion of Gio on that list is so dumb
Every team lost a player
If the Flames had traded him they would have lost another player like Kylington instead

That's fair, it's certainly "better" than the Vegas expansion draft where our lack of depth due to Trelving hand them pick an upcoming UFA from our roster lol.

Why these guys wanted out and how they were able to get out so easily are two separate issues. The first question has a lot of moving parts, some of which the GM is able to control, but others that there is no control over. The second part is almost exclusively on the GM.
The tale of Treliving in Calgary is complicated. One one hand, he made some decent moves, but on the other hand, he made some bad choices that really damaged the team.

I would say average at best is pretty fair, he also had some bad luck.
His UFA signings were brutal.
His coaching choices were largely awful.
He clearly didnt understand that if you squeeze players constantly but then splurge on losers its going to leave you with a bad reputation and in a poor spot when the player gets control of their own future.
The 'luck' part is man oh man...he could not get a goalie. Every goalie he went out and got rapidly turned into a pumpkin.
What upsets me is that he signed a bunch of ageing players to big, long contracts and then peaced out.

Trades mostly good
UFAs mostly bad
Coaches mostly poor
Goaltending mostly weak
Drafting decent
Pick management (picks in and out via trade) - too many spent for my liking
RFA negotiations strong, but possible
negative impact on future contracts
Are the Flames in a better place than when he started? Yes…he didn’t start with much….but it they don’t seem all that well setup for the future
Average cost guess?
