Kathleen Hanna's Sled Island Appearances Cancelled
http://www.sledisland.com/slog/2014/...nces-cancelled
It is with heaviest of hearts that the Sled Island Music & Arts Festival has to announce that 2014 guest curator Kathleen Hanna’s appearances at Sled Island, including The Julie Ruin’s Calgary debut, have been cancelled. Hanna’s struggle with Lyme Disease, documented in the film The Punk Singer, is ongoing. Unfortunately, she is currently having a relapse which necessitates a difficult 3-month course of treatment. First and foremost, the festival’s thoughts are with Kathleen Hanna, a true artist and inspiration, in this difficult time.
While Hanna’s appearances have been cancelled, her curatorial presence remains felt throughout the 2014 festival.

I was really excited for Rocket From the Crypt, Hunx and His Punx, Shannon and the Clams, Spiritualized, and White Lung/Vapid.
Now the Spits have been announced (after missing a Sled Island a few years ago due to boarder crossing issues), and I'm ridiculously excited!!!

Sadly, Hunx and His Punx are no longer performing at Sled Island.

I saw that. Kind of bummed.
But really stoked for the Spits, so I'll get over it.

My buddies band is playing this show, they're pretty excited. And what the heck is math rock? A term I have honestly never heard before.

http://www.allmusic.com/style/math-rock-ma0000012250
Math Rock is a relation to post-rock, a better known indie-rock style that shares similar aesthetics. Where post-rock has distinct jazz influences, math rock is the opposite side of the same coin -- it's dense and complex, filled with difficult time signatures and intertwining phrases. Also, the style is a little more rockist than post-rock, since it's usually played by small, guitar-led bands. Math rock peaked in the mid-'90s, when groups like Polvo and Chavez had small, dedicated followings among indie rockers on collegiate campuses.

PS I missed the boat on Bob Mould tickets Seems like it's passes only now. Anyone know where I could find a pair?

Get a festival pass, and show up at Republik early (as soon as doors open). Most people will be trying to get into St. Vincent from what I'm hearing.
Try tweeting at #sledisland for tickets?

36? has an interesting sound. Didn't care for it at first but found myself listening to the whole album and really enjoying it.
I have two groups of friends there. What's Wrong Tohei and the Repossessors.

Mark Mills was fantastic last night, perfect set up for the Operators.
Still not sure where I'll end up after the Block Party with Golden Age Club, the Legion and Broken City all looking to be pretty good shows. Might be able to get a couple in at Golden Age and maybe catch the last couple at the Legion.
