Pretty hard to imagine any scenario where this road would actually be useful to anyone in its present state...unless maybe you lived in the NW corner of Oakridge and were going to visit someone in the NW corner of Cedarbrae where you could save an immense 1-2minutes...

Exactly. You know it is a total non-story when even Farkas doesn’t manufacture outrage over it.

Tobogganing down Stony Trail by Tuscany/Scenic Acres was awesome!

Is that one of the few city sanctioned official toboggan hills though?

Heads up, there's a pretty significant new traffic alignment at the north end of the SWRR project this weekend where Sarcee, Glenmore and Highway 8 come together.

What could possibly go wrong with that crossover intersection on sarcee, right?

I’ve had the opposite experience at the other end of the ring road. I think they have done a fantastic job on the McLeod 22x portion of keeping traffic moving.

It's the same project at Glenmore and at 22X. I have no complaints about the traffic flow during construction, but I feel the designs of the intersections are more prone to mistakes from inattentive drivers for a whole host of reasons.

I have been quite surprised at how well traffic has continued to flow on Macleod during the construction.

That sharp left turn from Glenmore onto Hwy 8 is problematic, I've seen two accidents (and just about been hit a couple of times myself) by cars in the inside turn lane crossing through to the outside lane during the turn. I'll be glad to see that gone.

I imagine that must have turned to hell with snow accumulation

So far at least with weekend traffic it seems to be better than the last configuration. Except they had signs pointing the wrong way for the Highway 8 exit (have now pasted new arrows over top).

Alberta Transportation Minister Ric McIver says he doesn't anticipate any delays in the completion of Calgary's southwest ring road.
The city says some parts of the ring road have been completed early by taking advantage of lower construction costs.
McIver says the project is keeping that momentum.
"It's on schedule and, as I understand, it's on budget. So right now, it's scheduled to open in fall 2021. We feel good about that," he said.
|
No new information really, but I'll read any ring road related updates.
Also they posted new construction pictures back in October if anyone is interested:

The Interchange at 37th St is largely open now, but you have to pay attention to the signs. The former 37th St temporary bridge should be gone in a couple months as the permanent ramps on the east side of the interchange need to be built. The sharp left-hand turn at Sarcee is gone now, but the traffic signal remains until the ramp from WB Glenmore to NB Sarcee can be built. When it is done, the interchange can run free-flow. Our bulk cement driver was quite happy when I explained the changes that provided better access to Hwy 8.

Demolition work begins this weekend to remove the overpass at Glenmore Trail and 37 Street S.W. as part of the Southwest Calgary Ring Road expansion project.
The project runs Feb. 2 to Feb. 19.
Drivers are being warned to expect major delays because Glenmore Trail S.W. will have either partial lane closures or will be totally closed down many of those nights. Detours will be set up as needed and speed limits will be reduced.
|
Closures are at night, but Glenmore around 37th will be kind of painful for the next couple of weeks.

It was always a temporary bridge, having the weird traffic circle business was an interim measure.

It was designed to be a temporary overpass to bridge the gap between needing the traffic alleviated at Glenmore/37th and the Ring Road project getting done. IIRC to save costs it was designed and built with a 30 year lifespan or so, which is pretty darn short for overpass projects.
EDIT: for anyone interested, he was a presentation on it.

For someone who understands the project a little better, I have to ask: Page 6, the little horseshoe looking interchange at Richard Road -- is that still in the plans? That would be VERY welcomed for our neighbourhood.
