I think it's culture moreso. Let's take tipping out of the equation and talk about a grocery store cashier as an example. Here they're friendly, smiley "how's your day going?" whereas I can only talk about UK/Ireland but it's often sour faced "wtf do you want?" type service.

Vaccine conspiracy theories! Now there is belief that Damar Hamlin died on the field, that the Feds showed up at he hospital to cover it up and the government and NFL paid off everyone to go along with it, used a body double at the game last weekend where he attended, oh and when he does an interview it will be with a clone that they have developed since his death!!!

And prioritizing throughout is exactly what a patron should want . When my drink is close to empty I get asked if I want another.
I go to Europe for business almost monthly , and I can tell you how often you are sitting with an empty drink or waiting for a good order while servers are chatting in the corner
In fact , tipping in Europe is gaining more traction and I have seen places that have tipping the service is exponentially better
|
Typo on my part
Through put and bill total is what is incentivized not service.
I notice you said that you get good food service in food courts where tips are not expected. So clearly the tip is not what drives good service in Canada.

Immigrants and under 18 usually work these jobs . Both works hard without tips
Plus you can’t really not work “hard” at a food court . You are standing in front of a client on an assembly line of production optimized for throughput. Where at a restaurant or bar it’s easy to stand around talking or in the back
wasting time , etc

[shrug] You asked what Japan gets wrong, you got (several) answers. Doesn't mean CP hates the Japanese, it means that your view of Japan was shown to be through rose-coloured glasses.
Don't ask the question if you aren't prepared to hear the answer, I suppose.

This is the future those that want to eliminate tipping are advocating for. Shameful.

So management and training drives behaviour. You can most certainly do a terrible job at fast food.
Also perhaps owners are hiring the wrong people for their restaurant jobs.
Or perhaps tipping and onlyfans has a lot more in common then most people are comfortable acknowledging.

wait, what? what do onlyfans and tipping have in common? Do people tip on onlyfans due to societal pressure? Or that onlyfans should get rid of tipping?

Onlyfans is interested in a lot more than just the tip.

Tipping is popular because it gives old men a feeling of power over attractive young women. Also popular for the same reason it gives old men power over POCs.
It’s about the perception of control.

I believe he mentioned tipped positions where the employees are younger, whiter, and more attractive than non tip type positions.
Restaurant/bar servers in many places wear the little black dress like a work uniform (and I think it'soften a requirement). I doubt that's because it's the most comfortable clothing to wear while you carry food.

I'd liken tipping less to rape and more to sex appeal or general attractiveness.
But men aren't the only ones who tip so I'm not really sure where you factor that in.
It's just a fact that better looking people are treated better in society. That's more likely the cause.
I've never got the impression from anyone I've ever met or my own tipping experiences that tipping is about control over young women. I tipped my male server last night and it was the exact same tip I would have left a woman because I just hit the preprogrammed button on the machine for 18%.

You're not a creepy old man though.
I've had former coworkers say they tip based on "talent".
Where the quotes around talent were him making air quotes above his chest.

Read some old books and watch some old movies and you’ll see that tipping was done prior to performance to ensure decent service. Tip the maître de to get a good table and so on.

People tip grocery baggers. People tip housekeepers. People tip concierges. People tip baggage handlers. People tip taxi drivers.
I think your premise is pretty misguided.

Bar tabs and tipping bar staff isn’t a thing here in the vast majority of places. So when I go to the bar for my first drink, I always finish my order with, “and a drink for yourself”. The server either puts one on the bill for him/herself or takes a few quid.
For the rest of the night I then tend to get served pretty fast.
I learnt this from working in a pub during my student days. If someone bought me a drink, I looked out for them for the rest of the night to make sure they got served quickly.

Not just misguided but fataing weird. I tipped the dude who installed my hot water tank last week ffs. I've had guys tip me at my job to buy myself lunch...pretty sure they didn't want to fata me and I highly doubt I'm sexy to very many guys out there.
