Modern horror isn't my thing, but one I try and watch around halloween is Bram Stoker's Dracula. There isn't a horror movie that's both as visually bold and riveting as this. Crimson Peak got half of that equation right.
And now that I think of it, Pan's Labyrinth is a great one.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is amazing, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and nominated for 4 Oscars, winning 3. It spawned a bunch of copycat films of classic horror monsters with big stars and big budgets in the 90s but none were as good as Dracula. They had Robert Dinero as Frankenstein, Julia Roberts in a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde movie and Jack Nicholson and Michelle Pfeiffer in a Wolfman movie.

Wow, I have absolutely no recollection of that Jekyll/Hyde movie. It’s probably for a good reason but now I have to see it.

I think that version of Frankenstein deserves more respect than it gets. It's truer to the novel so it's much different than people expect. De Niro and Kenneth Branagh we're good in their roles.

It is 100% too early to start thinking about Halloween movies, Christmas movies, Valentine's day, the 2023 income tax season, and what to do for Canada Day.

Finally watched Top Gun.
Wow. I loved the first one, and they somehow managed to top that one. Loved all the nostalgia, the filming, the cinematography. Everything. Even the cheese, as it felt so appropriate for the movie.
I'll be rewatching again.

I watched it recently as well. It kinda felt like The Fast and Furious: fighter jet edition to me. The attack on the nuclear facility felt too far fetched for me.

It wasn’t really marketed as being about Jekyll and Hyde. It was Julia Roberts with a bad haircut.

I watched Malignant a couple weeks ago. It was on my streaming service so though I'd give it a try. I really enjoyed it! It has that old-school horror feel to it.

Malignant. Is. Awesome.
I love twists that make you jump up and karate punch/kick the air because of its unbridled awesomeness.

This week's theme of horror movies is horror movies of the 2000s. The 80s had some of the very best horror movies ever the 90s gave us all timers in Silence of the Lambs and Scream, and the 2010s started elevated horror which continues today.
But a forgotten decade in horror is the 2000s, with many people considering it a terrible decade for horror. IMO that's simply not true, there were so many fantastic horror movies during that time, here are a few top recommendations from me:
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Remake- This one is my second favorite of the franchise just behind the original.
House of Wax - unfairly hated on upon release because Paris Hilton was in it, but a very effective slasher film
Behind the Mask The Rise of Leslie Vernon
The Descent - features a brief appearance from Julie the Cat Gaffney
Let the Right One in
The Mist
28 Days Later
The Ring
Jennifer's Body
Rose Red - If you enjoyed The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass check out this Stephen King Mini series from 2002.
House of the Devil

As a seasoned horror indulger, I must say I still get the creeps from the Ring.
It generated loads of hype and viral content but it was a rare case where it earned those things as the film was effectively chilling. Managed to hit the marks on atmosphere as well as scares, which is proving to be a tough task for most films these days. I'm curious about the Barbarian, which is from the same guy behind the Ring and Grudge.
The Descent and LTROI are also ones that stuck with me.
The first Orphan film that preceded the sequel that's now streaming was also quite good.

I think the problem with this era was a heavy reliance on false jumpscares and style over substance. The Gore Verbinski Ring remake is pretty much the apex of this. Nothing makes me hate a horror film more than a LOUD STINGER *cat jumps out* scene, sometimes followed by "Oh you silly kitty I..." *killer appears and murders/chases victim*
I do however like most of the movies listed.

My wife is not a fan, so I don’t watch many horror movies, but I remember Event Horizon (1997) and Gothika (2003) being pretty creepy. I had a copy of Event Horizon and I’m pretty sure she put a piece of bacon in the case so the dog would destroy it.

Those loud psych-out scares were great for movie dates, though. You want your person to have more reasons to cling on to you / seek comfort. Going to those during high-school when you could bank on them being sprinkled in every couple minutes was great.

I don't mind a good jump scare if done well, but I agree if it's over used or doesn't make sense then that's when I don't like them. Jaws, Jurassic Park, Friday the 13th series or Exorcist 3 have some great jump scares.
