I've seen a few of the movies mentioned recently. They were okay:
Death on the Nile: Another Christie murder mystery with Branagh leading the ensemble cast. Like its predecessor, it's an acceptable adaptation that offers a few good twists and turns despite being dull at times. I did like how they gave Poirot more of a back story but there were mixed results when they tried to tie this in with the movie's themes around love. It also felt strange that a lot of effort was put into the costumes and set design only to place them against mediocre CGI of the Nile. 6.5/10
The King's Man: The Matthew Vaughn spy series returns, this time a WWI prequel staring Ralph Fiennes. The action is excellent with some fun well choreographed set pieces that live up to the standard from the original. The plot on the other hand leaves something to be desired. At times it felt like the writers were just trying to tick boxes to create an origin story and tie in with WWI leading to this feeling more like a collection of set pieces than a proper story. Some of the historic tie ins were fun and I didn't see the twist coming at least. 7.5/10
Last Night in Soho: A stylish thriller from Edgar Wright. I enjoyed the premise and was invested from the start but the story started to lose focus in the 2nd half. There were solid mystery aspects that took a backseat to meandering horror scenes and, although it managed to stick the ending, I felt some of this could have hit the cutting room floor. The music and cinematography was excellent but overall more style than substance. 7/10

I know people were going to multiple viewings of this movie... seriously???
The fighter sequences were great, but the rest is brutal. Original is far superior
I was going to go see it this past weekend, until I looked at the prices; all the cinemas near me are Cineplexes where they only have "UltraAVX" showings for $25!! Crazy overpriced to me.
I'll go see it in a few weeks at Canyon Meadows...

I think movies are all on sale this week. I watched DragonBall at Market Mall for $6.99

The use of phones (and watches) in theatres has become quite prevalent. Is this a post-covid thing?
I would see it once and a while previously, but now every movie i go to has at least a few
It seems to depend a lot on the theater and movie. My wife and I regularly go to the 21&over theater with seats spaced out quite a bit, and rarely have an issue.
Taking my teenage kids to a movie with a lot of other younger people, and it's usually a mess.
I probably average going to about 10 movies a year, as I have for a while, but I find I rarely watch a movie at home any more even with a decent set up. Streaming series are just way better suited for at home watching.
If movie theaters die out, I would guess that feature films in general will start dying out as well.

I go to a lot of movies and completely ignore the Ultra, 3D, DBox, 4DX, etc. I look at the Regular times and that's it. With the Cineclub membership I pay $9.99 but yes, right now with the promo it's $7.88 until Sep 1st.
It definitely dragged out, kind of in a similar way to Last Night in Soho.
The third act in particular. Its fine to stretch certain moments out if there's a payoff of some kind, or if it effectively establishes a mood or creates tension. But the moments that were stretched out didn't add anything and just made it a slog to sit through. I really liked the first 2/3 of it though.
I'm pretty sure the chimp side story was based off the tragedy of Travis the chimp. I honestly found that to be the creepiest part because that whole real life story disturbs me.
Haven't heard of Travis - I'll look it up. But I agree that the chimp side story was easily the most disturbing part of the movie. I know there must be some symbolism in the upright shoe, but I couldn't figure it out.
It’s National Cinema Week here in the UK, some chains are charging £3 for tickets all week.
For reasons specified above (phones, talking, etc.) I’m a member of a more adult themed cinema chain (comfy seating, pricey, food brought to seat etc - not the other ‘adult’ theme) where I pay a monthly sub and get 24 tickets a year. The seats are configured in a way you almost think you’re the only people there.
I saw ‘Nope’ on Sunday. Like others, I found the chimp scenes to be very disturbing. I thought the acting throughout was fantastic, but I enjoyed the first 2/3s more than the climax which was stretched. I think as I grow older, I like to focus more on dialogue and performance rather than on action. That said, I loved the action in Maverick.

Today is the 15th anniversary of Rob Zombies Halloween. I remember when it came out I absolutely hated it,but re-watching the entire series recently I was surprised that I actually really liked it. Not as good as the original but one of the better sequels/reboots.
To say it was confusing would be an ... errr ... understatement.
One of those movies that you'd likely need to watch over and over again to fully comprehend.
Wouldn't recommend it (unless you're a repeated viewing kind of guy/gal).
I recently watched it again and I kinda think I got it better this time. But will probably watch it again.
I have an unhealthy infatuation with the Bourne series and the recent Bond films and I find I keep noticing clever new things every few times I watch them, or making a new connection that I was previously oblivious to. Does that happen to anyone else?

I just want to say if you would have told me in the mid-80's that there would be 12 Halloween movies and Season of the Witch would end up one of the better ones, that's probably telling of just how bad most of them have been. I thought the Zombie movies were better than the ones that followed. Halloween Kills was painful to watch to the end as it was just so bad. If they are going to continue to make Halloween movies they have to kick Curtis to the curb as she's awful in these latest movies.

Disagree. I've enjoyed the new sequels so far, especially the 2018 film, which in my opinion is the best Halloween flick since the original.
I do like the first Rob Zombie film though. And I agree, Season of the Witch is terrific.
The "Old British Film Festival" continued last night with The Mouse That Roared. It's an early Peter Sellers movie, with Europe's smallest nation declaring war on the USA in order to get foreign aid. Light satire, plenty of giggles. not a bad way to kill 80 minutes.

Today is Sept 1st, it's never too early to start thinking about Halloween and horror movies to watch. Each week until Halloween I will pick a theme and give a few suggestions for you to enjoy. I know I got a lot of flack for some of the movies I haven't seen, but I have seen alot of horror movies and while I'm not an expert I feel this is the genre I'm most able to make recommendations.
Because today is the first day of school in Calgary, here are some horror movies involving school you should check out
Return to Horror High (features a very young Clooney)
H20 - A great Halloween reboot
Carrie
The Faculty
Prom Night 2 Hello Mary Lou - the first one is a typical slasher but this one is bonkers in the best way.
Cherry Falls - takes the classic horror trope of if you have sex you die and flips it on its head, where the killer is only killing virgins.
The Craft - a top recommend for anyone that hasn't seen the original.
Feel free to post suggestions of other movies or other themes you want me to post about in the coming 2 months.
