I figured 20. Not surprised.
I don't know if 20 was really deserved, but there it is.

Absurd. The appeal lawyers are already licking their lips.

Going so far over the top makes the chances of an appeal wiping the whole thing away greater, I'd think.

It definitely warranted a suspension if nothing more than for the league to make a statement in regards to protecting its officials. But 20 games seems extreme, especially considering Wideman's lack of history with playing 'dirty'

In my mind the league has ruled that it was intentional because, as the plethora of youtube clips prove, they have never suspended for accidental contact. Even in non-hockey plays, like a fight/scrum or the Joseph incident, they have never suspended.

To me the lack of league precedence for suspending accidents, which I think the flames could make a good case this was, should rule out any suspension at all.

Ridiculous and I think it still should have been 0, but when you start to hit the international news, I guess its to be expected it would be some stupidly ridiculous amount so they could satisfy the media. Kind of funny that this suspension is probably almost as much as the number of penalty minutes he gets in a season sometimes. Kind of embarrassing for all sides involved, but I guess the NHL is very sensitive to how the media portrays them.

Anyways, it doesn't matter too much to me since I'm kind of hoping for the lottery pick anyways...

Other notable 20 game suspensions:

Bertuzzi on Moore
May purposely hitting someone with his stick

And oh yeah:
Lysiak intentionally tripping a linesman.

Haha what a joke. I expected 10ish and thought that would be too much, but enough to set a precedent.

What does that even do? I'm pretty sure even the dirtiest of players aren't looking at the 20 games and saying to themselves "Oh boy, Wideman just got 20 games, I should try harder not to hit referees"

Nope, I think he will lose any appeal too. The NHL obviously saw the same thing as I did when you look at the entire picture. I think they got it right.

If 20 games is upheld Wideman would be eligible to return on March 14 against the Blues

The 20 games is just to give wiggle room for the appeal process so everyone can save some faces. At the end I think it will be like a 10-game suspension.

Should have been a 10 game suspension.

Expect a pretty significant appeal from the NHLPA here.

Edit: Crazy that Dreger thought an even bigger number was expected...that would have been crazy.
I assumed Dreger meant longer as in "not short". Not longer than 20. Perhaps I'm wrong.

It certainly feels like kowtowing to the officials union. Players' union likely to appeal? I would hope so... that's a lot of quiche.
