Islanders skate at UBS Arena for first time
Barzal says new building 'blew me away' ahead of inaugural game against Flames
https://www.nhl.com/news/new-york-is...me/c-328076914
Quote:
The Islanders played at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, from 1972-2015, then moved full time to Barclays Center in Brooklyn for three seasons before splitting games between the arenas from 2018-20. They played all of their home games at the Coliseum last season and started this season with 13 games on the road to allow more time for construction at UBS Arena. New York lost the final four games and is 5-6-2 entering the opener.

The big question is which Islander will score their first goal in the new building ... on Sunday, against the Leafs.

How weird is it that the Flames of all teams are their first opponent in the new building.

Not sure if this was really planned, but this:
October 7, 1972 - Islanders lose their home opener and first game in franchise history, 3-2, to the Atlanta Flames. Ed Westfall scores the Islanders' first goal at 17:29 of the second period.

Agree, but it's fitting. The Flames and Islanders joined the NHL at the same time and the Flames' first NHL game was against the Islanders in the Nassau Coliseum on October 7, 1972. The Flames won.

Here's hoping they can make it 2 for 2.

Man, people complain what our new arena will look like, but UBS arena looks like it was built in the late 90s.
I'm sure it's great inside, but from the outside, yuuuuck. It legitimately looks like it was designed after the existing BMO centre.

Isles might be in the midst of a COVID outbreak.
Anders Lee, Ross Johnston in COVID protocol and Andrew Gross of Newsday reporting that there are further players that are waiting for test results to be confirmed.
This is in addition to Pulock and Bailey being injured.

Morris Stefaniw scored the first goal in Flames history. I think the franchise should retire his number to note that accomplishment.

It has great pedestrian scale from the parking lot where the people will use it so that’s all that matters.

I'm excited for this one. The Flames have been playing great and the fans and both teams are going to be jacked for the start tonight.

Really? I think it looks timeless, the brick look will always look current. Beautiful IMO.

Saw a picture of the new Islanders arena and I think it’s timeless and amazing. Personally I can’t stand the latest fad designs like the Oilers arena and our new arena on the horizon. The Islanders arena will still look amazing in 50 years. Fad designs get old real quick. Maybe I’m just old fashioned lol.

Totally agree with you, it fits in seamlessly and looks amazing. Definitely prefer this type of design vs. The newer ones.

This arena sounds like its being sponsored by some sort of Bowel Syndrome.
