She was great in Spy. I really enjoyed that movie. Beyond that and her performances on SNL, the rest of her roles have been pretty underwhelming. She's funny as hell, she just needs better screen writers.

All I could think of was how far had Jason Stratham's career fallen that he took a role in that crap. Every scene he was in he looked embarrassed to be there.

Interestingly, Spy is his highest rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes.

I liked that movie as well have nothing against her but I think she works much better in a support role. IMO leading roles are stretching the limits of what she had to offer as a comedian and actor. Can get away with it with some well written movies but when it comes to the comedy genre even the best comedians wish they could get better scrips and writing.

I didn’t particularly like Spy, although it was one of McCarthy’s better roles, but what made it different is that she didn’t do her normal female Chris Farley role, which I think she’s awful at. The idiot loser obnoxious pig role just isn’t a good one for her. Part of the reason I thought Bridesmaids was so awful.

Except Will Ferrell is infinitely more funny than Melissa McCarthy could ever dream of. Will Ferrell can get away with doing the same roles over and over again, she can’t. She’s more like Adam Sandler.

I know this is pretty old, but I watched “Infernal affairs”. I thought it was good, but I don’t think I would put it above “the Departed”. It lacked the richness of Scorsese’s version. Do people like “infernal affairs” more because it came out first and the whole “the original is always better” philosophy or is there something else?

We'll have to agree to disagree. There are some things about Ferrell that I really like, but he's stuck inside of the box of shouty socially awkward loser same character in every movie guy for the most part, and maybe that kind of comedy doesn't appeal to me, but I just find that in movies like Anchor man and Talledega nights and that recent one where they ran the gambling casino in their house that it was all the same stuff.

Sorry Captain. Ferrell is actually a pretty talented comedian. All comedian's even the best have similar issues in that you can only stretch them so far before you realize they are playing the same comedic character over and over. It's why comedians like Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Bill Murray, Whoopi Goldberg, etc moved on to serious roles to sustain their careers and why guys like Adam Sander run their course. Not saying Ferrell has it in him to become a top dramatic actor but there aren't too many comedians that could sustain a top level film career based solely in comedy. I consider Steve Martin one of the greatest but even he's done some solid dramas over his career to supplement his comedic roles.

I would recommend the movie "Stranger Than Fiction" for you then. Excellent movie.

In that same vein even Sandler put up decent performances in "more serious" roles in Punch-Drunk Love & Reign Over Me.
There is a reason those guys don't keep making more serious movies though:
Punch Drunk Love: $18M Box Office
Reign Over Me: $20M Box Office
In between those two movies though he made:
Anger Management: $135M
50 First Dates: $121M
The Longest Yard: $158M
Click $138M
Hmm wonder why he gave up on serious roles. They realized what their cash cow was, didn't care about how they were viewed in the industry and just made a ton of money.

Adam Sandler is a bit of an outlier as he hasn't made a really good comedy in over a decade but still can sell a movie on name alone as the Grown Ups movies make a lot of money despite not being all that great. He's been smart to move towards animated movies as that's been a cash cow for him as well. How many comedians can boast that staying power especially given how mediocre his films have been a whole? Very few.

Infernal Affairs > The Departed
Anyone else excited for CIFF? The full line up was released today. It took me some time to narrow down to my 5, I usually split a 20 pack with my gf, sister and bro. Disappointed that some films from TIFF didn't make it but it made my decision making easier. My list:
Climax
Cold War
Hummingbird Project
Behind The Curve
Shoplifters

Maybe if the Departed had some of Infernal Affairs actors in lead, but with the production values of Scorsese’s version. I guess I wasn’t crazy about the DiCaprio/Nicholson/Matt Damon combo.

I just don't find him in his movies to be anything more then a junk comedian that rolls out the same character and mannerisms over and over again. He might be talented, but then if he is, then he's lazy.
Steve Martin to me is a great comedic actor because it just feels like he explored and pushed boundries, and yes he did some solid dramatic roles.
Ferrells not for me, I might have found his first few movies funny, but after that it was just the SOS.

Yeah, my favorite film he's starred in, by a wide margin. I think Farrell needs absurdity in his films, but here he's a very honest character reacting to absurdity; it's the perfect balance of using what makes him a great comedic actor, but dialing it back just a bit and finding some subtlety.

Eve since guys like Jack Lemmon and Peter Sellers were nominated for Academy awards, most highly successful comedic actors have taken a run at being serious actors. Some aren't especially successful (Razor's Edge, Punch Drunk Love), but some are excellent (Dead Poets Society, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). I'd group Stranger Than Fiction in with the latter group.
