IMO Thai is the best of the asian cuisines though. So much flavor! I love a good Vietnamese soup or sub- the addition of french influence is obvious and delicious. Korean... Korean is good but way more on the savoury pallet than the south asians. More like upscaled Japanese food without any sushi (total faux pas to say this i am sure).

Of course some of this dislike may come down to simple preference, but for those cilantro-haters for whom the plant tastes like soap, the issue is genetic. These people have a variation in a group of olfactory-receptor genes that allows them to strongly perceive the soapy-flavored aldehydes in cilantro leaves.
this suggests to me that my olfactory-receptor genes are superior to yours!

Apparently, for some people cilantro tastes like soap or metal. It’s like that for our son, although not for my wife or me. I don’t know about genetics.
Edit: unless he’s not my son. Geeze!

I don't like any Asian based food- Chinese, Korean, Thai, Japanese even Indian but I am not sure it very similar to the flavors/Spices.
I do not know enough about cooking to break it down to a specific spice. I find Soy Sauce absolutely disgusting but I think it would have to be more than that. I also hate Kimchi which I don't think has anything like Soy Sauce in it.
And yes cilantro is awful, hate it on anything I have, but find it more in other foods than Vietnamese since I do not eat that.
Wow... I can't even fathom someone in the modern world hating the entire southeast Asian scope of cuisine, not only because it's all pretty delicious, but because it's so varied and has a multitude of flavors. It's simultaneously fascinating that you have this limited of a palate, and yet another reason added to the list of why we will never be friends.
You probably put ketchup on your well-done steak.

He's probably just generalizing. Look at how much attention he's got from one statement.
An entire continent's worth of food has too much variety. Especially in today's world so many different cuisines borrow from eachother. To lump all those diffrent cuisines into simply "Asian food is Awful" is a pretty narrow minded take However - he is entitled to his opinion.
Don't know too many people who don't like Bulgogi(KBBQ)/Dumplings/Tempura. Bet he likes one of those.
My MIL from China is the same but the opposite way. She thought all western food, except for fries and pizza for some reason are terrible. She simply hasn't tried enough variety and doesn't want to assuming it's all the same. Her views won't change but she admits there are aspects of western cuisine she now enjoys after reluctantly trying with us.
Man, hating the entire spectrum of Asian cuisine is... mind-blowing. The flavours differ between region and in the best way possible. Some of the best meals I've ever had were Japanese, Chinese, Singaporean, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, etc. - in fancy restaurants, or even dives right on the streets. Unreal to hate an entire continent given the variety and depth of flavours. Brutal.
On a related note, cilantro sucks major ass. I'm a REALLY adventurous eater overall; I'll eat it if I absolutely have to, but it's the only ingredient in the world that I will actively ask to have removed from an order.

Scam YouTube channels stealing content. I’ve noticed more and more of these channels, especially those focused on science. I did a search for Prof. Brian Cox and there were videos of him speaking for a short time followed by an AI generated voice continuing the topic over stock video.
Apparently you can change your cilantro dislike. Just eat more of it, and avoid the stems. I propose an experiment where all you cilantro haters try it for a month and see if you can be more perfect, like the rest of us.

Nope I hate ketchup and never want to think about a well done steak let alone eat it.
