Valimaki Playoff Debut in Game 4 of the WCQF
Just saw an update from The Score.
Valimaki makes his playoffs debut tonight!
Calgary Sun Reports:
Quote:
He will skate alongside fellow freshman Rasmus Andersson on the third pair, with Oscar Fantenberg bumped to the press-box.

I kind of wish they shook things up a bit more but I also understand giving the lineup one more chance to figure it out. If they can't, hopefully Peters finds a way to get Dube in there at the very least. Maybe take out Brodie depending on how well he does tonight.
Definitely excited to see Valimaki, though and I think this makes all 3 defence pairings more dangerous.

Wish it would be Brodie making way, but probably will be Fantanberg

We need the wheels in this series. Just keep him with Gio for safety.

Scoring that meaningless goal might be what keeps Brodie in the lineup.

Just keep the puck away from Brodie at all times. In fact, they should make Brodie Mackinnion's shadow. His one job is to follow him around and knock the puck away from him whenever he gets it.
He's the one best equipped to skate with Mackinnion all over the ice. As long as he isn't flat footed, which he wouldn't be if he's shadowing Mackinnion, he should be fine.

I think this is a great decision. Valimaki is a highly intelligent player that simply lacks professional experience, but he has tools and vision to make excellent plays all over the ice. Fantenberg is a solid 3rd pairing d-man, but he isn't going to change the game. The best you can hope for is a safe player who does things consistently.
Valimaki's only shortcoming is a lack of experience. He's a superior player in every other imaginable way.

According to Ryan Pinder, Valimaki does not have a performance ceiling close to that of Cale Makar.

The Calgary media at large seems to be enamored with Cale Makar. I get it, local product, but from an outside perspective its a bit odd. Tons of potential, but this borders on fawning. IMO

That's fair.
Valimaki was a very good pick at 16, Makar was 4th overall.

Valimaki Playoff Debut in Game 4 of the WCQF
It’s annoying that many people on here felt that Valimaki was superior to any of the other Dmen vying for that last spot yet the flames decided to roll with Fantenberg. It’s annoying when a veteran Dman, who has lesser skills, got to play in the first 3 games when Valimaki was clearly the better choice and this isnt me trashing Fantenberg who hasn’t been a problem. In my opinion Valimaki should be in the top 4 over Hanifin but this is a start. The kid is a beast and the flames messed up by not giving him more games before the end of the season. He’s probably going to become our 3rd most reliable Dman by the end of this series.

I hate to say it because we're playing him in a playoff series, but there's a good reason for this. Makar could very easily be the next Karlsson, he's such a good skater and just thinks the game on another level

The guy was drafted 4th OA, and his play since the draft has exceeded expectations. People are fawning over Heiskanen too. If there was a re-draft, it would probably go 1 Petersson, 2 Heiskanen, 3 Makar.

Brodie was on the ice for one of six goals last game. If anything, a 6-2 drubbing is what you get when you break up the top pairing and put a rookie against Nathan MacKinnon in the playoffs.
Don't over think this. Brodie-Gio gives them the best chance to win.
