Would probably just set things up for an arbitration hearing next summer. I don’t think that makes sense for either side.

A huge potential raise from an extension signed as early as January 1st 2020, while still keeping last year's roster mostly intact. Maybe an AAV of 5.75-ish this year, and then a spike up to 8x7 or 9x8 or whatever both sides feel is sensible long term.

The risk then lies with Tkachuk in that scenario. Instead of guaranteed money for around 7 years, he's only getting paid for one. What happens if this season he gets injured or has a decline year etc, then his options look more like Bennett's contract for next year? Big risk for him.

I expect one or both of Frolik and Brodie are still moved for no salary back and that frees up room for 7-8/yr for Tkachuk for 7 or 8 years.

I don't know Chucky, but he seems to me like the kind of guy that might be keen to bet on himself. On the ice, he doesn't shy away from from taking risks.
I could see him taking one year to really show he can be the man, and play for a more significant contract.

I would prefer he sign something longer myself though.

But that is the opposite of what Tkachuk wants.

He's want to become a UFA as soon as he's able. Not necessarily to leave, but to set him up for a huge payday for 8 years while he's still young enough to command that type of deal.

THat's what all the premium RFA's want now. Money and term to UFA.

I can see Tkachuk not wanting a 1-2 year deal at lower AAV or a 7-8 year deal because he wants his big pay day when he is a UFA sooner than later. Great for the player but it's not beneficial for the team. Lots of comments seem to be on Tkachuks side in that "he wants to maximize his value in the short term". Of course he does. But what about from the Flames standpoint? If you want a 5 year deal, guess what.. they don't want to pay you huge money because it's a detriment to the team and it likely loses the asset early. It's a give and take situation. The Matthews contract really threw a wrench into things. Anyways, I hope he signs long term!

5 years sure, but the madness has to stop eventually with players getting 8year deal money on 5 year terms.

Is it though? Other then an offer sheet really only Matthews has gotten that ridiculous 5 yr deal. Just because Dubas Struggles doesnt mean everybody else will cave. I could be missing others though.

But thats the deal. These things did happen. Dubas isn't good at contracts? Seems that way, and its going to hurt other GMs. Which is why it they probably aren't big fans of Dubas right now. Like I said, genie is out of the bottle but we'll see. Tre is a wizard after all.

I think Treliving gets him for 6 years as that is the term he seems really comfortable with on his big extensions
RFA- Gaudreau, Hamilton, Lindholm, Hanifin
UFA- Giordano, Backlund

There would be only two reasons why the Flames might agree to this deal.

Firstly, they think an offer sheet is coming in on a 5 year deal like Aho.

Secondly, they want him to play this year and are convinced that he won't accept anything other than a 5-year deal.

I expect Tkachuk will cave before the season starts and sign a 6-year deal at more money than we like. It will start with an 8. If Tkachuk wants the same as Aho, he'll want more than $8.5M because he's added a 6th season. I'm not saying he deserves that.

The best contract we can hope for now is, I think, 6-years at $7.5M. That would be a big win for Treliving IMO.
