Probably because the Barclay Centre location is reopening.

The Glenbow will now be free admission when it re-opens after renovations and will have new name:

History buffs and art lovers will be able to enjoy Calgary's Glenbow Museum for free, thanks to a $25 million endowment from the Shaw Family Foundation.
According to the museum, the announcement means when it reopens, the Glenbow will become one of the first major Canadian museums to offer free general admission.
The museum is closed for a multi-million dollar revitalization aimed at transforming and modernizing the building.

Quote:
The building that houses the Glenbow will be named the JR Shaw Centre for Arts and Culture, a news release said.
In addition to the endowment, the Shaw family will be donating an extra $10 million to create the JR Shaw Institute for Canadian Art.

^That's great. I can't last much more than 30 minutes in a museum, even though I kinda like them. Makes it hard to justify paying for admission.

The coffee scene in Calgary has also matured quite a bit over the last decade, and I think it's left them in a bit of a weird spot. Starbucks used to be the "fancy" coffee, so they could justify the higher prices, but now all people who used to pay $4-5 for a coffee at Starbucks have graduated to the better independent coffee shops that have sprung up over the last decade (Phil and Sebastian, Rosso, Analog, Artigiano etc.). Now Starbucks is in the middle of the pack quality wise, but are still charging fancy prices.

For every Starbucks that closes I seem to see a sign saying "Analog Coffee coming soon"

I know Calgary has a legacy of volunteerism, but for all the wealth created in this city, it seems large scale philanthropy is a little lacking.
Nice to see this from the Shaws.

In the past both were open simultaneously but that was pre-covid levels with workers already decimated by layoffs.

Is the SAIT Culinary Campus turning into the Food Hall in that building?

When are good coffee shops going to open in the burbs of the north half of Calgary?
There’s like a few inner city and a Rosso on Centre St but not really a lot anywhere else.

Coffee is the one thing I never understand why people pay shop prices for. It’s so easy and cheap to make good coffee at home.

To be honest it’s less about the cost per cup and more about the experience of getting out of the house, either while WFH or just on a random weekend, or just having something I don’t have supplies for at home.
I’ve got a decent grinder and a French press for our morning brew, but I’ve no desire to purchase an espresso machine or learn the ins & outs of steaming milk. On a sunny afternoon I’d rather enjoy the walk to the local shop & drop a few bucks for a treat.
Yes I could get all the equipment & supplies for a mocha at home, and it would be cheaper per serving… but the experience of making it myself and continuing to stay in the house wouldn’t be the same.

Is it designed to look like it was made by the birds using twigs and leaves?

I love stuff like that. Mid size cities are so monotonous with design, in general. Whether it's a risk that works out or a risk that becomes a punchline, I just enjoy those projects more.
We live, work and play here and have a very good life compared to most of the world, who cares if a project goes for something weird and it ends up sucking? I'd rather 100 creative projects with 70 being awesome and 30 being hilarious than 100 soulless bridges, art pieces and buildings.

Be interesting to see over the next weeks when people return DT re Starbucks. The one in Bankers Hall is pretty busy being the only one now for a few blocks.
Wendy’s in Gulf closing is odd. They’ve definitely been open during COVID, I was there about 2 months ago or so.
