Woof, rough game, but not unexpected. This is the St Louis team that I had expected to see Monday. They got a much better performance out of Husso and they’re just a much deeper group at forward. They have 3 legitimate lines and quality scorers all over their line up.

Also helps that the Blues were basically gifted Jordan Kyrou so we could rent Brian Elliott for one season. Flames just lost to one of the best teams in the league and a Stanley Cup contender, no shame in that. I do hope that management keeps this in mind at the trade deadline though, if the Flames really want to compete with the best and win rounds, the overall depth of this team just has to be better.

Thought Backlund was easily the best skater for the Flames and it wasn’t even close. That was ‘A+’ Backlund and the Flames should try to ride his high for as long as they can because his ‘C’ or ‘D’ game is probably just around the corner. But I give him credit tonight, in a tough playoff style game, against tough opponents on top of their A game, he shined bright.

Thought the Blues feasted on the 3rd and 4th lines tonight who were a combined -4. Ruzicka especially with a deer in the headlights type of game, was just awful defending down low. He’s got some nice tools, but he’s raw AF. He’s gonna need more experience and maturation to be an everyday NHLer.

I thought the Blues did a good job of boxing us out from in front of the net. It felt like we had a lot of shots from the outside.
It was a decent effort though, so it's hard to complain too much.
I'm curious to see what Saturday looks like; Vancouver doesn't look like the pushovers they were.

don't agree with Mr Sutter on this one
Nope. I think Vladar should have started.

How do you get playing time when you won't play him? Not sure I understand Sutter's logic on this

When you have a stud like markstrom you would play him every game if you could. The only time you don't is if he's tired. Sutter doesn't think he's tired.

Takeaways from the game, including more Sutter wisdom.

NOTE: I likely would have started Markstrom as well. Vladar will have lots of opportunity after the all-star break.

LOL.

Flames look great against a dis-spirited mediocre Columbus crew, and get beat by a Blues team that wanted to beat them. So what's the takeaway?

"If only Backlund had hit that empty net" is the Flames mantra, and until that kind of thing changes, they'll be those same old Flames.

Is this even a fair ask? Players aren’t always going to score on every chance they have. It’s not like the Blues went 5 for 5 on their scoring chances. They’re just the better, more deeper team.

Look at their top 9 forwards and compare them to us. Tarasenko, Schenn, Kyrou, O’Reilly, Patrick, Perron, Buchnevich, Saad, Barbashev. I’d take that forward group over ours any day. Conversely, the Flames have mostly been just a one line team this season. It’s not close really. Unless Binnington was in net again giving up muffins again, maybe then the Flames could’ve came out with a win in this one.

You also don't want to burn out your starter out before the playoffs. Vldar needs the playing time to stay sharp in case of an injury to Marky.

Look how many people thanked my post, you only post after losses which is lame.

Flames won 7-1 and 6-0 this week, 2nd best win percentage in the division. Not gonna win every game.

That’s a good measuring stick game. St Louis is a very good team playing motivated hockey after getting blown out by us 2 days ago.

It should be easy distinguish this kind of loss from the Ottawa loss, or this year's team from last year's... yet...

Losses suck but they are playing well in general and I feel like they could win 2/3 the rest of the way if healthy. Pretty promising.

No I think Vladar should have started one of these two. He hasn’t won in a month… well that’s not going to change by not playing. Just my opinion against a hall of fame calibre coach though.

Vladar should have started last night in the front half of the back to back against the out of conference team

Considering it was an embarrassed Blues team who were rested against a tired Flames team, yeah, pretty much expected. The Blues played a great defensive game and took advantage of their opportunities. Really, only Backlund had a good game from my viewpoint. The top line was pretty ineffective and the bottom six got burned by speed and positional play.

It was...and the team just didn’t match up. The Flames are just as big and play a similar style and when it came down to it, the Blues just had more artillery.

This game reminds me of the Lightning loss. Sometimes you’re just outclassed by a better team. There’s no shame in that. The Blues were Stanley Cup champs not that long ago and look like contenders once again this season? Are the Flames at that level yet? Nope.

I think the Flames can challenge the elite teams of the league and maybe even push them to 7 in playoff series, but the Flames are definitely missing some ingredients to truly contend.

In a playoff series the Flames won't play in another city the night before while the other team waits.

Not sure how this game is a benchmark but the wins against the Blues and Panthers weren't.
