I'm not fussed about the name or the logo. The league and teams survived Mighty Ducks, Blue Jackets, Penguins, Oilers, Maple Leafs. All dumb sounding IMO.
Teams with cool names like the Eagles, Pirates, Tigers - all a distant memory.

They actually should drop it when you think about it. If you say; "The Calgary Flames are playing the Los Angeles Kings (or the Las Vegas Knights)", you are really just doubling the article.
To a fluently bilingual Spanish-English speaker (which Nevada probably has many), it would sound weird I would think.

"The Los Angeles Angels" literally translates to "The The Angels Angels".

The trademark was rejected. Vegas gets a chance to respond to the rejection, but this combined with the akward unveil ceremony and supposedly time and research in developing this trademark... lol

Just a few weeks out from the reveal of their name and logo, the Vegas Golden Knights have hit a setback, as their trademark request was denied by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
A USPTO document made its way across the Internet on Wednesday evening detailing the rejection of Black Knight Sports and Entertainment’s (the company owned by Vegas team owner Bill Foley) attempted trademark. The reason for the denied request? The Vegas mark shares too many similarities with The College of Saint Rose Golden Knights.

I never liked the Golden Knights anyways. It's too much like the "Mighty Ducks", when they eventually just became the Ducks.

Hahahaha what a joke. I feel like they should have finalized the trademark details before making an announcement, no?

Seems a bit of a stretch. The argument given isn't the logo, its just the prominence of the word mark. It is not an issue the same font or style, or, not an issue at all with the same name in and of itself, just the prominence of the words "Golden Knights"in relation to the rest of the logo.
The supposed similar logo/wordmark here, which the Vegas ones seems to be too similar as far as wordmark prominence/dominance in relation to the rest of the logo:
https://twitter.com/wingingitmotown/...rc=twsrc%5Etfw
From the above linked article from the US Patent office;
In this case, the wording “GOLDEN KNIGHTS” is the dominant portion of both the registered and applied-for marks. In the registered mark, the wording “GOLDEN KNIGHTS” appears significantly larger than the subscripted additional text. Further, the “GOLDEN KNIGHTS” wording is centered in the mark, and appears in the more stylized and distinctive typeface as compared to the remaining wording....
Marks may be confusingly similar in appearance where similar terms or phrases or similar parts of terms or phrases appear in the compared marks and create a similar overall commercial impression...
In this case, the marks share the common wording “GOLDEN KNIGHTS,” and the additional wording does not change the overall commercial impression of the marks. The wording “THE COLLEGE OF SAINT ROSE” in the registrant’s mark is presented in such a manner that consumers encountering the mark are likely to read it as a tagline; consumers will focus on the wording “GOLDEN KNIGHTS.”
Accordingly, the examining attorney finds that the marks are identical in part, sharing their most dominant and source-identifying portions, and are confusingly similar when compared in their entireties.

Pretty simple fix. The college releases all claim to the trademark, Vegas licenses that specific version of the trademark to them for 100 years for $1/year, the college gets a Million dollar donation.

So if they can't trademark it, will they (have to?) change name/logo?

You wouldn't want all those consumers out shopping for The College of Saint Rose apparel to be haplessly duped by inferior Vegas Golden Knights merchandise.

that's just bad reporting.
The "trademark" wasn't denied. What was denied was registration on the federal trademark registry. Being on the registry gives you certain additional protections against subsequent users, and extra damages available against counterfeiters, but it really doesn't have anything to do with whether one can either use a trademark or sue others to enforce it. The laws still recognize common law trademark rights, and those rights are about 90% as good as rights associated with a registered mark.

I think the poster means, the college pays the NHL team $1/ year, NHL team donates 1mil to the college.

FWIW, something similar played out with the Carolina Hurricanes when they came into existence. The Lethbridge Hurricanes transferred their Canadian trademark to the NHL team in 1997 according to the CIPO. I doubt the actual details of that transaction and what the WHL team received in compensation will be available anywhere.
