Seems weird that he doesn't seem room for himself on the big club though, as I only really see 11 forwards that I think are guaranteed to start the year with the big club.
Huberdeau, Kadri, Kuzmenko, Coleman, Backlund, Mantha, Sharangovich, Pospisil, Zary, Rooney, Lomberg. That's 11.
Then I would expect Pelletier to be 12, Duehr to be on waivers, and then Coronato/Klapka/Stromgren as guys that all are waivers exempt that could be in the AHL or NHL depending how camp goes.

risking Pelletier on waivers, no matter how big or small the risk, would be Treliving-level stupid

I hope he doesn't drag this into camp. It would be catastrophic for his season and career. I think Conroy knows this and is calling his bluff in terms of what is probably a 1-way v 2way argument.

They only do that for top 1st rounders or one that had done something in the NHL
Pelletier was at the bottom of the first round and has shown very little at the NHL level
He is waiver material now

with no cap constraints, wouldn't the Flames just maintain a 23 man roster for the whole season? they can keep the 14th forward or 8th defenseman slot flexible for waiver eligible players.

... said after 37 total NHL games coming off a injury plagued season? Tough crowd.

Pelletier was at the golf tournament (video clips on calgaryflames.com). Suggests it's pretty close.

Yeah I think Conroy will learn from Treliving's mistakes.
While I doubt losing Pelletier is any big loss, given his injury history, waiver status and the fact that the club isn't going to be very good, you should give him at least a chunk of the season before exposing him to waivers. Fair or not, his draft pedigree means you want to take a little longer look to see if he can live up to that promise. There is no downside to doing this.

What first rounder other than Valimaki have the Flames lost to a waiver claim since they moved to Calgary? I looked back a few years but then got bored.

We need a 'Red Hot Fata' gif with him moving with one of those walkers with the Tennis balls on them.
