It’s too bad we have to wait until the season is over to find out if Gaudreau will re-sign. I would think Treliving already knows though.

Johnny has been playing awesome this year
I think he can be even better with NOT Monny and NOT Simon (his speed was ok though)
Can we find another C and RW for Johnny who can stick handle and who is fast and who can one time slap shot the puck?

Could trade for McDavid I guess - his slapper is only OK though. Maybe Eichel or Matthews are available.

What?
Did you you mean to finish that with "vs forcing him to move because she wants to be (and likely him as well) close to her friends for the same millions of dollars, if not more"?

Never thought of this angle but I really like it. I was of the view that you have to trade him as he either wants to be out east or will want huge money over an 8 year term.
I think signing him to 65 plus million for 8 years would end up terrible sooner rather than later.
2 or 3 more years at 6 or 7 million per would be the best of both worlds, though I don't know if that would do it.

There is zero reason why Johnny would sign a short term reasonable deal.
This is his chance at UFA he worked hard to get at a reasonable age, so you should fully expect him to max out his contract.

Good point, but this off season was a strange time.
But that’s a one year contract at max dollars, not a 3 year cheap deal.
And Hall changed teams.
So, not particularly relevant if you want to use it as a precedent for Johnny singling a 3 year cheap deal with the Flames.

Teams couldn't commit to a long term high $ this offseason. 2022 will be a different story (hopefully?).

I think Johnny will be good well into his 30’s and would sign him long term but not at a huge raise (unless he completely reversed and rewrites his playoff narrative in the next couple of years).
It is a tricky spot for the Flames when you sign these players who are 21-23 to 6-8 year deals is they will be free agents at 28-29 and signing them to big raises from there is super risky. Flames locked into Gio, Backlund, and Lucic to large deals into their mid-late 30’s and Johnny is going to be looking for a decent raise to his 6.75M

Extremely few professional hockey players are already married when they turn pro. Every player's wife went into the marriage knowing what the deal was, and that her husband's job could easily require him to move to different cities and would certainly mean a lot of time on the road. I don't think it's misogynistic to expect the women involved to recognize that.
Is it misandrist to say that a player must play for the team closest to his wife's hometown if she so chooses?

Panthers may be dangling forward Brett Connolly as trade bait
Quote:
In his latest “31 Thoughts” column on Sporstnet.ca, Elliotte Friedman reported Connolly is “one name to watch on the trade market.”
Connolly, who won a Stanley Cup championship with the Washington Capitals in 2018, has been scratched the last two games

Seems to meet all the criteria (age, position, size) Brad Treliving has been searching for. We may have found ourselves a fit here. Sure Brett Connolly ain't no Mark Stone or Josh Anderson but he'll certainly be better than Josh Leivo or Dominik Simon.

Brett Connolly is the type of player this team used to acquire to help provide depth offense.
He’d be a David Jones style acquisition, and road back to the absolute middle of irrelevancy would have come full circle.

Not a terrible idea if the price is right but how are you so sure he is any better than Leivo?

Connolly has scored 19, 22, 15, and 15 goals in his last four seasons... not bad.

Connolly's not exactly a reclamation project. 19 goals in 69 last year. 15 even-strength which would have ranked 4th on our team in 19-20. For a team gasping for 5v5 production, Connolly @3.5m isn't bad.
I'm sure Simon and Leivo will manage though
