Default Lytton Fire

Looks like the town of 249 people may have burned to the ground. Gotta feel awful for them. Witnesses on twitter have stated that a train that had burning lumber on it may have sparked the blaze. If that's borne out to be true wouldn't want to be the head of CN or CP.

Never understood why the provinces don't have water bombers at the get go when they have such extreme conditions.

The train thing doesn't make sense, especially over that distance. Someone would have called it in and it would have stopped. The odd spark from a bad bogey though, perhaps. But a load on fire? Hard to believe.

Water bombers are ready status... they take time to go over a mission plan, start up, get in the air and coordinate drops... This isn't B-1 nuclear ready launch status stuff.

That looks so awful. Hopefully everyone made it out safely. Wasn’t it the same village that broke the record for hottest temperature in Canada ever yesterday?

I can’t imagine how brutal it will be fighting forest fires in this heat.

Weird. Have already read they determined it was started by a lightning strike but....

Yeah you can see it's completely clear and blue skies on left and in other videos I've seen although for sure lightning was occuring inside the fire as fires make there own weather when they get going,

Also looks like they had a helicopter up bucketing the fire.

So it got pretty hairy here in Kamloops this evening.
Massive lightning storm with winds whipped up a bunch of fires and people evacuated.
We are packed ready to go and we have a family of evacuees at ours right now.

Looks like things are calmed down right now, but tomorrow is another day.

ugh - that sucks blender. glad you are ok

back in 2003 (okanagan mountain park fire) we moved my sister out of her rental suite and into my parent's place. 2 days later the fire got so close to her place that the siding melted. a few days after that we were moving stuff from my parents place to my place. it just sucks.

stay safe and be prepared to go at a moments notice.

I hated living in Savona and Kamloops as a younger guy in the summer. Fires made such a nervous summer every year.

Just so people have a sense of what just happened in Kamloops.

As the storm hit, 4 seperate lightening strikes hit Strawberry Hill and created 4 seperate fires viewable from town. Strawberry Hill has been on fire a few times but thankfully hadn't even reached town. Then minutes later a strike hit Batchelor Hill which is closer and hasn't been on fire before. Minutes after that there were multiple strikes on other areas of town and fires were beginning to rage. Then the big boom hit and a strike on Juniper Hill. Juniper is a subdivision up on a hill that has one road in and out. Within 15 minutes the fire was massive and was cover the slope that separates two different neighborhoods: Valleyview and Juniper. Both were evacuated but due to a single road leaving Juniper, the traffic was slow

Thankfully, most evacuation orders have been rescinded as the rain and the firefighters were able to knock it down. Much of the vegetation in that area is Sage brush and grass so it was easier to control. Check out @kamscan on Twitter to see some absolutely crazy pictures and video

No idea if this is the cause of all the lightning in Kamloops - but fire clouds generated an absurd amount of lightning strikes in BC (and Northern Alberta) -

This is so sad. I can't imagine the helpless feeling as you watch your parents get killed

Quote:
Chapman says he and his parents, who were in their 60s, were preparing for a late afternoon barbecue when they noticed smoke and flames in the distance.

"Ten minutes later, our house is fully engulfed. There was nothing we could do. It came in so fast, we had nowhere to go," he said.

As the blaze engulfed the house as well as sheds and trees on the property, Chapman says he helped his parents take shelter in a trench that had been dug to repair a septic system.

As high winds whipped flames and smoke all around him, Chapman said he ran to some nearby railroad tracks, hoping the fire would pass.

That's when he said the power line crashed down across the trench where his parents were sheltering.

"I knew my parents were in that hole and I'm watching the house burn and I'm thinking, 'Oh my God.'

"The power line pulled right out of the house, and it came right down on my parents."
Quote:
Chapman said he was certain the blaze would take him next as he lay exhausted, barely able to breathe. But the fire moved through the area as quickly as it arrived and he said he was eventually able to head back to the property.

"I wish I didn't. I seen my mom and dad's remains, burned," he said.
