That ice sculpture is great, the rest of it is pretty good fan art.

Quite the disparity between critic and fan opinions for both the Orville and Discovery.

Did the critics watch the right show? Martin-Green may be charismatic as all hell but the character Michael (especially through the first couple episodes) is about as charismatic as a 2x4 to the face.

That's on the writing. As someone has commented, the Orville may be derivative, but with the Discovery it's as though the network just gave a huge pile of money to people who had no idea how to script a television show. It's character-driven, but the characters are unappealing. The mash-up of Star Trek sci-fi and grimdark just doesn't work. And the dialog is awful.
I honestly don't know what the critics see. I get the impression a lot of people are deeply invested in this show doing well, regardless of what they're seeing week to week.

I have not laughed out loud in a while but:
That line did the trick.

Last night's episode was great satire on our current social media obsessed culture.

Good episode, but couldn't help but compare it to a similar episode of Black Mirror.

I thought it was really well done and they completely low keyed it without a lot of the normal style of humor.
Not only was it about a social media obsessed society, but a really kind of vindictive me first society, the scene with the hat was a direct shot at that.
The scene where the shuttle was coming up on the Orville was breathtaking.
They still haven't gone back to Bortas and his mate's problems, I wonder if he shows up 500 pounds heavier from eating ice cream and watching movies.
No sign of Norm McDonalds slug this week either.

Yeah while the show has worked on tackling some pretty deep concepts, mostly they've been moral questions.
This was the first time that they took on a straight political issue and while the story was about the power of social media, this story was really about the deeper issues of human rights within a pure democracy where everyone has an individual voice.
You get the impeding sense that if something doesn't change this society wouldn't survive much longer.

Another link to Star Trek as well with Stephen Culp (Who's always good) shows up to play the court appointed PR agent.

Should I get back into this show? Gave up after episode 1 but it seems like people are pretty pleased with it.

I might be in the minority but I felt that episode was the worst so far.
Both the actor and character of John LaMarr were terrible. J Lee's showed weak acting skills, and validated why he should remain a supporting character for future episodes. That scene where he sat down with the Publicity officer was cringe worthy
John LaMarr, who mucked up with his grinding of the statue, should've shown some kind of character growth. Instead of being humble and apologetic after being released from that shock chair, he went on to talk smack to the institution guards and spoke down to them claiming he was a space man.
The writers should've had a scene of him back on the Orville in his quarters, taking a second to reflect on his actions and maybe have him pick up a tablet and read about the historical significance of the statue figure.
In the end, LaMarr just came off as a jackass who walked out of the whole thing still feeling that he did no wrong and was better than everyone else.
The Writers missed some golden opportunities too to throw in some more gags.
After LaMarr taunted the institution guards, they all should've said "oh wait!, we forgot to down vote you too" and the 3 guards brings that down vote number to 9,999,999.
If they wanted to run with that joke, the pubilicity officer could've been that 10 millionth vote and right before he hit that red triangle, LaMarr could've jumped in and sucked up to him, telling him how good his shoes looked. A guard could've uploaded a photo of LaMarr kissing his shoes and a scene switches to the Orville where the bridge is reacting to the photo on the main screen as Malloy hints at printing posters of the shoe kissing.
Writers also could've had Issac, give up on trying to gain upvotes and straight up hack the voting system. Mercer could've made the joke that it wasnt the first time in human history that a democracy has been interfered with.
The jokes fell flat and they took this plot too seriously. Hope the next episode is alittle more light hearted
