I'd be ecstatic if Bennett developed into a Mike Peca.

He had a decent point-per-game during the Dead Puck Era, gritty, multi-time Selke winner, known leader. Bennett will be lucky to hold Peca's jockstrap, and that's no disrespect to Bennett.

How many penalties would we take or draw if Versteeg played on his line. They're both ___ disturbers.

My bad, I clearly am ignorant to the fact that he was a multiple selke winner. Just always picured Bennett being more of a goal scorer but if he could develop a 2 way game like that I would be ecstatic.

This may be a bit of revisionist history, but wasn't it a basically consensus at the draft that Bennett would need at least 2-3 years to bulk up to be effective at the NHL? Not that he's small but the way he plays requires him to be stronger.

Yup, that was the consensus at that time. The whole pull up, shoulder surgery thing probably didn't help his progression with that.
I've personally always felt that Bennett was rushed a little bit into the NHL. Not that he's not skilled, smart, or quick enough, but because the style he plays dominates juniors but takes time to adjust to the NHL. He is the definition of a guy who needed AHL time.
Even up until a few months ago, it still seemed that he was trying to play a jr. game in the NHL. I don't know how many times he'd try to dangle past a defender off the wall or from the blue line and get stopped. Again, he's a skilled player and i'm fine with him doing that, but it takes some seasoning in the minors to learn to pick your spots. Him getting stuffed every time he tries those movs in the NHL not only deflates his own confidence but coaches aren't gonna reward those types of plays.

With that being said, I'm still extremely high on him and wouldn't trade him, not even for Simmonds. I think the whole "he's gonna be better than Monahan and maybe even Johnny" statements people were saying during training camp really wasn't good for expectations.
I still think he'll turn out to be somewhat of a grittier version of couture

If the apple isn't to fall too far from the tree, then Matthew needs to step up his grit!

Did anybody take me seriously?

Right there with you. Especially as a centre, he probably would have benefited from one more year in Junior, and then some time in the AHL to refine his game. He was drafted for talent, not NHL-readiness. But the Flames' hands were tied after they burned his first two ELC years during the 2015 playoffs.

So, the Flames got the Lady Byng winner in the family?

In his first full NHL season, Keith played 83 games and had 201 PIM: 63 minors, 7 majors, and 4 misconducts. So far, Matthew has 94 PIM in 57 games: 31 minors, 2 majors, and 2 misconducts.

Crazy to see that the following season, Keith was nearly a point a game player while spending over 3 minutes per game in the penalty box. Keith had 8 seasons where his average penalty minutes per game was higher than Matthew's average this season.

It seems that his Dad was roughly one year older than him as well, which at this age is huge for development. More like 9 months technically I guess, but still!

Does Juolevi even have 30 assists in the OHL? RT @DarrenWHaynes: With two helpers tonight, make it an even 30 assists for Matthew Tkachuk

@dbekar81 I'm stealing that, if you don't mind.

Yes that was me who started that.

Forget Juolevi, Tkachuk has more points than Gaudreau!

And Hall, Thornton, MacKinnon, Drouin, Duchene....

He could hit a wall as opposition teams build a read on the kid. He may struggle in his sophomore season. If he can creatively agitate but stay out of the penalty box is his next challenge. I know Flames coaching staff have talked to him about it.
