I think it may be a possibility, the Flames were willing to commit to 4 years x 5.5 million for LW Jason Zucker just a few months ago.

That was also connected to sending a $4.3M cap hit out. The Flames as it stands do not have enough money in my opinion to re-sign Tkachuk, Bennett, Rittich, a backup goalie, Mangipane with the cap space they currently have. If they remove Brodie it could still be tight. How can they even consider going after Lee?

I thought I heard he was looking to return to western Canada. I think of all the players the Canucks are targeting he is one they will likely land.
Calgary he is familiar and would have a good opportunity on the second line but there is no cap space.
Winnipeg there is a bit of a forward glut and they have cap issues
The Oilers have cap issues but can offer the best opportunity next to McDavid.

As a UFA, Lee will get a big term and too much money. The Flames cannot afford their existing guys without moving out some cap first. Until that happens, they aren’t shopping for UFA’s, at least not major ones.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but he's an American from Minnesota, and from what I can see has never played in the West, let alone western Canada.
Why would be be looking to return?

Probably the Canucks. Looks like they are going all in on trying to make the 2020 playoffs.

Talking ferland on that one, not lee. Ferland would be a nice get for the tram again. Wonder if he would take a bit less for the familiarity (still wouldn’t be cheap). Not sold that we can make the cap hits work without shipping out more than we are already hearing

Ferland will be interesting as some teams will like what he brings to the table but he's one of the most hot/cold players in the league and has become a bit of a concussion risk. I personally think he's going to get paid much more than he's worth which is why I kind of hope the Canucks sign him.

Are you sure about that? Isn’t he from Manitoba?
Ferland played for the Flames you must be confused with someone else.

For better or for worse...this has the potential to be a really boring free agent period for Flames fans. In order to sign anyone, we would need to dump some salary. In order to dump salary we need someone to want the player as I dont see the flames using picks to sell. I also don't see Frolik or Stone as better options than what is available during free agency...as such I expect teams with cap space to chase free agents first.
Most likely once the dust settles, some teams will still be short a defenseman or middle six winger. At that point there may be opportunity to trade Stone or Frolik (or buyout stone...not preferred). Unfortunately, by that point it is unlikely that the key free agents are left. I also suspect that free agents will be quick to sign this year as there is only so much cap space to go around.
Brodie is a bit of a different beast as he could be part of a hockey deal or a salary dump (I would guess hockey deal). I expect the flames to make a trade or two July 1 to 15 and maybe make a minor signing (e.g 1b goalie).

Boring is definitely for better. Free agency is like a sugar high for fans. We all get excited that our team may be in on some big names and when they bring in a new guy it brings with it optimism. In the long run it usually ends up as a regretful period for the team and fans as the majority of the contracts handed out on the first week of free agency turn out bad for teams. It's a week that's more for players to cash in than than where teams actually better. Teams get better these days via the draft and trades as when's the last time the Flames got better after free agency? Hudler or Frolik? Not exactly a ringing endorsement for free agency. The best signings are usually the under the radar signings in the later weeks where the contract values are more inline with expected player performance.

I thought you were talking about Anders Lee; I missed the Ferland mention.
You're right, Ferland is from Manitoba

LeBrun reporting Pavelski has meetings with Dallas and Tampa. He also says Buffalo called Pavelski's camp but doesn't have a site visit.

Can't imagine the Flames have money for anyone but a goalie, unless the can move a contract or two.

Fine by me. This team needs a few minor tweaks and simply more experience.

I agree with your take. But unless Pavelski is willing to sign for league minimum, I don’t see how they fit him in.
