I would recommend the Italian Store (Scarpone's off Deerfoot and Mcknight) over Lina's any day. I find they have better prices and are more authentic Italian than Lina's which seems to cater to the Yuppie crowd.
With the price of groceries skyrocketing, it's no wonder City Market and Sobey's Evanston are converting to a T&T and Fresh Co (?? I think that's what it's called) respectively. I get that City Market has a higher end deli, meat, and bakery section, but when they charge over $3 more than Superstore for the same grocery aisle item (Kicking Horse Coffee as my example), there is a problem and I'm not shopping there.

Italian Centre Shop on Fairmount Dr (Off Southland) is better than Scarpone's. More variety, better deli and the cafe is excellent.
I agree about Lina's though. It's a last ditch stop if ICS doesn't have what we're looking for.

Lina's is close to me (130Ave) but work close to Italian Centre Shop.
What is the main difference, in your opinion.

We live close to each other I think.
The quality of the deli is the big thing for us. They also carry more smaller Italian brands, some of which are local.
Also, those pre-made sandwiches (spicy and mild) you can get at ICS are amazing.
ICS is more authentic for sure and it is owned by an Italian family. Lina's used to be but was sold a few years back and then expanded to the 130th location.

My Italian in-laws shop at Scarpone's because they live in the North. But Italian Centre is a nice road trip and is more of an outing.
Lina's is the Italian store that the Italians I know don't shop at. It has definitely gone downhill since the owners have changed, and the prices seem higher than the others.

I used to go to Lina’s pretty frequently too, but the after the layout change and decrease in grocery items it didn’t seem like much reason to go. The one off Deerfoot by McKnight is much better, and hopefully they get their cheese fridges working again. The big bags of frozen ravioli and tortellini are great, and the cinnamon sugar Italian donuts.

I haven't been to the new ICS because it is so far away from where I live, but I'd like to go try it out sometime. Most Italians up north (including my family) shop at Scarpone's over Lina's. Lina's has gone downhill since the original owners sold out as was mentioned above. My sister used to work as Lina's when she was younger and was adamant that Lina took a lot of "shortcuts" and was extremely cheap. It also doesn't hurt that some relatives work at Scarpone's and I have gotten to know the owners over the years so I frequently receive some discounts and freebies.

Not a joke at all. Bizarre timing if there's a fire. Hope everyone is safe.
The reason I commented about Smugglers was because there was an article in the Herald about nine Calgary restaurants that were in the top 100 Romantic Canadian restaurants for Valentine's Day. Bolero was one of them, and then I immediately thought of Smugglers. I thought they were going to re-open last November. It sounds like maybe never now...

Smugglers was bought from the original owners in March and was being renovated and supposed to been reopened in September. No idea if it was.

The charm of Smugglers was the original 70s interior and chairs and deco, I hope its not all up in flames if the new owners did not already scrap it all.

A fire at the Smuggler’s Inn steak house may delay the planned reopening of the Calgary establishment, but it won’t mean an end to its famous prime rib.
Cindy Down with Renoir Management, the company that owns the building on Macleod Trail, said Smuggler’s Inn and Frank’s suffered serious water damage Monday night, but added that can all be repaired.
“You can still walk around on the main floor. It’s just a mess with the water damage,” said Down. “We were very lucky.”
An office on the roof was damaged in the fire.

And more on the sale and renovations. I was being lazy last night...

Down is closing the former Franks area of Smuggler’s to make one big 10,000-square-foot restaurant space on the main and lower levels.
More emphasis will be on seafood, which is to be displayed in the former long salad bar area, but Warman says when Smuggler’s reopens in mid-September, the mainstay will be its famous prime rib.
New windows are being installed to lighten up the dining area, although still sporting the comfy and elegant dining chairs. An additional private dining room to seat 50 will be offered on the lower wine cellar floor, where the bakery is housed.
The most noticeable change will be at the main entrance, where a large new outdoor bar is being built.
A huge benefit to customers is the parking lot with space for 250 vehicles that is currently being resurfaced and landscaped. The exterior of the building is being repainted and work is being completed on both the wraparound patio area as well as a 200-foot-long outdoor dining space for Bolero and Monsoon facing onto Macleod Trail and along the north side of the building.
