On a related note, there's lots of the city's proposed development signs popping up in that area. Lots of low-rise to mid-rise residential and mixed-use. Not immediately on the Matco property (right around the station and the mall), but on the Killarney and Rosscarrock sides. I sit on the city's design committee for the Westbrook area and there's some cool ideas and densities we have right from Crowchild to Sarcee. Seems like things are actually starting to move, which is great to see.

Went there for the first time two weeks ago, me and the wife both agreed we will stick to Country Hills, that's long been our favorite and it's a little closer anyways.

Customizable coke machines are the best, Market Malls half assed mini concession sucks, staff still move at half the speed of the full menu guys elsewhere, missed all of the previews.

Since you brought this up - as a committee, do you have any "teeth" when it comes to design standards, quality of material, etc? Can you send a developer back to the drawing board to come up with something "better"? Or are we working on a "please, just build something" basis?

Unfortunately, we do not; our work is more high-level / 50-year planning type stuff. Those decisions about materials, design, color, etc. are reviewed during the Development Permit process with the City, and that's when that process would mostly happen (and this is when the developer could be told to go revise their design). If there's a development that's particularly controversial / needs further review, it can go through the Calgary Planning Commission (made up of public sector folks), and/or the Urban Design Review Panel (made up of industry experts).

Hope this helps!

Anyone know what's going into the old Hakim Optical at Macleod and 58th?
I've been watching the build over the past couple of months and believe it's some sort of restaurant.

Yeah it's a restaurant. https://developmentmap.calgary.ca/?find=DP2021-2073

Building permit says Tokyo Street Market. https://maps.calgary.ca/myProperty/

Very disappointed to find out that the Loblaw's City Market in Sage Hill will be turning into a T&T in the new year

The Asians aren't.

I guess Loblaw isn't gonna run with that brand in the Calgary area then? The Superstore downtown was originally suppose to be that.

Yeah it'll definitely be popular and I understand the move. I just really liked the city market, and likely won't go to T&T once.

Definitely looks like they won't keep the brand here. This was the only one I think?

Disappointing, the Sobeys in Nolan is such a pain in the ass to walk around in, only other close options will be the two Co-ops and Wal-Mart

I liked City Market for some things but because I am in Varsity it was too far to visit regularly but I did enjoy my City Market/Bulk Barn trips.

I visit T&T very infrequently and the City Market conversion compared to their regular stores (Franklin and Country Hills) will be substantially smaller so I wonder how that will be accepted by regular T&T shoppers.

Yeah, I really liked city market for a few things - they almost always have 1 excellent meat deal per week in their flyer. I've bought some very inexpensive rib roasts there, as an example. It is nice to combine with bulk barn.

Although I didn't go to the Sage Hill City Market that often, every time I went it was sooo quiet and made me wonder how it was a profitable business. Sure, some very nice stuff and just perusing the cheese fridges was really interesting. But good ideas and interesting don't always mean good business.
Oh and yeah, almost a mandatory stop at the Bulk Barn if you're in the area. Also found the newer bottle depot there to have always been clean and well organized and efficient. Still haven't had the chance to visit some of the ethnic restaurants in that area... any recommendations?

Not gonna miss City Market. It wasn't going to last in a suburban area.

T&T will be awesome!

I would love it if the University District had City Market instead of Save On Foods.

Why? Save-On is better in almost every way except price. Loblaws has a very limited cheese selection, a terrible deli, the worst baked goods in Calgary for grocery stores, and atrocious meat. These things were not better at City Market. It was RCSS with higher prices and dismal service.

If you aren't going to a place like Lina's for your deli meat you are doing it wrong. Much higher quality and better selection and prices vs a supermarket.

Lina’s was remarkably the only place in Calgary that seems to have German Butter Cheese.

I can't comment on deli as I haven't bought from either store. I actually think that City Market has better baked goods than Save On Foods. City Market is also better for prepared foods like sandwiches or roast chicken and they are better for meat. I haven't bought much house brand from either store but I like the PC ice cream a lot more than the Save On ice cream.
