Thanks, it started working for me as well, but it was intermittent. Then when I made it to payment, it kept timing out.

On Thursday morning, I gave in and phoned my booking through because my fare was down to the last two seats available - Indeed two.

The lady on the phone was fantastic with first class customer handing skills. She said they'd had problems for days and had problems putting my payment through as well. Supposedly it was something to do with the travel bank. She sorted it and gave me free seat selection.

Kind of depressing Westjet has sort of fallen apart (esp even if compared to AC) only months after making Calgary their hub and AC scaling back here. Guess we're saddled with this garbage fire now.....

YYC has always been their hub and them announcing it as such hasn't really changed anything from our perspective. It's only really Toronto and Vancouver that have lost service. There are still other options.

We've lost a lot of AC service in what looks very much like a quid pro quo for Westjet pulling out of YYZ/YVR.

I have preferentially flown Westjet for the last few years after AC diluted the status I could qualify down to irrelevance. But having the AC non-stop options was really nice as both a backup and for competition/pricing reasons.

I think Calgary flyers are going to end up as hub captives. That has pros and cons - we aren't getting the same number of flights (Europe, Japan, 787 to PVR, etc) any other way, but are likely to end up paying higher prices as a result.

I may have missed some of the announcements but other than LGW what has been reduced out of YVR for WS?

I don't follow Vancouver that closely, but the source of the 787s that they're bringing to Calgary is both Toronto and Vancouver.

Vancouver will lose flights to London, Toronto, and Puerto Vallarta on the 787. The latter two will just be a downgauge to 737 service, but that means no business class and less capacity.

I suspect you'll see less Hawaii capacity out of Vancouver as well as their connections get consolidated at YYC.

Edited to add: a solid chunk of my civil aviation knowledge comes from lurking on airliners.net, where Acey is among the best YYC/westjet posters, so definitely take his thoughts above mine.

Not sure about Hawaii, in non-peak season it may still make sense to funnel traffic to YVR and connect onwards to the islands. They can also utilize 737-800's instead of having to go with the MAX from YYC instead of taking a capacity hit.

Yeah, that was poorly worded, sorry. It's more I'm thinking more that instead of growing YVR-Hawaii capacity the growth will all be in Calgary. Eg, we got a Kona flight this year. That is probably all the capacity they'll add to KOA for the next multiple years, and without it they might have increased frequency/upgauged YVR.

I don't think they'll have a shortage of MAX frames for very long- they're still getting more 737-8s and the new order of 737-10s is scheduled to start arriving next year. There should be plenty of planes to do basically as much YYC-Hawaii as they want - and unless they add some more long-haul, year round destinations a decent chunk of that will be on 787s during the winter.

I will never again fly to Hawaii via Vancouver after my last trip. That is a big ass airport to run with a giant suitcase in!

If you were connecting why were you dragging a suitcase through the terminal? Or do they do transborder connections differently there?

Nice and YVR don't go together. Anything but the new area is so dated, its early 2000s style to a tee. Nothing like 8 foot ceilings in your arrivals area to really set the mood

If I can't get a direct flight, I always connect through Seattle or San Francisco, sometimes LA. Then you clear US customs in Canada and don't have to do that again in the transfer city.

I believe transferring through Vancouver, you clear US customs there, not in Calgary. Have not done that in awhile so not 100% sure on that.

Is WestJet still trying to buy Sunwing? That'd be interesting to see how they fare being half TUI and half WJ owned
