Could just be they want something a bit more formal then a tap on the shoulder when announcing the new head coach. Could also be that they are trying not to go through he media since that didn't really work for them before.
Not happy about the Flames having to restart talks, unless they see a plan for the Arena as a vehicle to include public-use recreational facilities with it. If it includes a plan to for citizen services around it, I'm cool with this as shared infrastructure would be best going forward.
If it is strictly a hockey arena with the Flames as the main/only tenant, I am really not happy about this.
The most aggravating thing about the narrative the Flames are trying to create around the arena is that the City should be the active party in this. Sorry, but the City isn't the organization that needs a new arena, the Flames are.

Yeah that response from the Flames is pretty bad. I don't understand at this point how they think this plays out. Why not say you are looking forward to re-starting talks?
Jeez, the Flames really hate their fans, don't they?
Just #### 'em. #### 'em to hell.

I doubt they have any real desire to re-starting talks about a new arena in Vic Park though.
Ever since that was the kick off to Nenshis re-election platform last September?, it has been clear they want no part of it....or at least until he isnt involved.
If they dont want it there, then there really is nothing to say at this point and no matter how they word that, the viotrol we are seeing in this very thread will only multiply.
My guess is that ownership knows where the pressure lies on the Olympic Bid now and there is absolutely no way that the bid is awarded without a new arena or all the major events taking place in Rexall...which no one will support in a plebicite/referendum. So ownership is just playing the long game and will see what happens down the line.

It's just business.
Iirc the ioc has already said the dome is fine for a venue
If the city builds a new arena as part of winning an Olympic bid, are they then still in the drivers seat as far as negotiations with the Flames, as the city now owns the arena? Or is that too simplistic of a view on the matter on my behalf? And I mean negotiations as in revenue, lease terms, etc.

Look at it this way.
They will have the choice of exactly 3 tenants to take up that lease etc...and all 3 are owned by the same group. If they build an arena without any Flames input and/or funding, then they are screwed on the other side of things as these arenas truly have to have an anchor tenant to be anywhere close to be sustainable on their own.
