I'd be so choked if I was a Senators fan. Not only are you going to lose your franchise player, but you're going to get a crappy return for him because the owner is trying to save money.

It's looking more and more like Melnyk wants to sell/move the team.

It depends.

If they use this to move Bobby Ryan, then signed a big FA for that money, in theory the return for EK includes this new player.

If he pockets the saving, they should fold the team.

I think the Flames could be the third team to take on Ryan; however, both Ottawa and Tampa would have to retain parts of the cap hit; say Ottawa retains 25% and Tampa retains 15%. If the cap hit can come down to $4 to $4.5 million, I think it works for the Flames as you would be getting a top 6 winger for 4 more years.

Ryan could play up and down both wings with with Monahan-Gaudreau or with Backlund or the Jankowski line.

Question is, what type of prospect or player would the Flames give up to get that. Is the rights to Adam Fox too rich for a top 6 winger for the next 4 years at a cap hit of $4.5 million? Or is it a Dube or Mangiapane type prospect that gets traded?

Tampa and Ottawa eating a combined 50% on Ryan for Wotherspoon to either team would be interesting.

Are you getting a top 6 winger though?

The guy has played with Duchene and Hoffman, or Stone and Brassard, and he's got 7 goals this year. Those are not bad linemates, or shouldn't be, especially when you consider that Karlsson's on the backend with them. He also received 3 minutes of PP time a game. He's soon to be 31, injured, and doesn't provide much when he's not scoring - and he's not scoring much.

Maybe I take the risk of him for "free" at 4-4.5M, but giving up additional assets for that? I'd prefer they stay away in case Ryan is just damaged goods at this point.

I wouldn't take Ryan if you paid me.

He'd have to be in the 2 million range for me to consider it even baseline viable.

Can you imagine 2 brouwers for the next 3 years?

Which big FA is going to want to sign in Ottawa with Karlsson headed out the door?

No one. That's who.

Question: if Bobby Ryan was acquired at 50% retained and the Flames bought him out, would they have to pay for the entire buyout or would the other team take half of it?

I assume that the Flames would just have to buy out their share as that is all they agreed to take on during the trade.

I wonder what would happen to the team that retained salary in this instance.

Would they have the option to buy out the remaining years of retained salary as well, or would they just have to keep paying it out until the contract would have expired?

Not even sure why fans would even consider it. It's hard enough to compete in this league with one boat anchor contract.

My understanding is that if a buyout occurs on a player that has retained salary, the buyout and its cap hit is split by the same retention %.

If it's either now or June, it really has to be now. The value is so much higher now. Like, "1st round pick plus good prospect" higher.

Id take Ryan if Ottawa retained 50% and gave us their 1st round pick. Why would any team in their right mind take Ryan otherwise ? The guy is so worn out.

They don't have their first round pick, traded it for Duchene

I wonder if we could score someone like Tyler Johnson along with the bobby ryan contract. That would really stack us for a run this year, and it would help out the lightening in landing Karlsson, between Brayden Point and yanni Gourde they might think they have the depth to stomach it.

Something like:
Katchook
Sergachev

for

Karlsson
Ryan

+

Johnson
Ryan

for

Brouwer
Rasmus Andersson or similar piece

BOLD prediction: Flames end up with Bobby Ryan with some salary retained and Tampa's 1st round pick

Does Ryan have to be protected if there was an expansion draft?

I really don't want him unless there was something very significant coming back for taking him on. Which I doubt there would be.

That’s pick is likely number 31. Don’t think that is enough to make the Flames eat the Ryan contract unless either Ottawa or TB retain a significant amount of salary. I don’t think either has an appetite for that.

The 30th pick in the draft is not worth taking on Ryan for 4 years.
