why would you pay him that much? he had one regular season worth that money in his career.

He's had two and he's in the middle of a third.

Plus minus was always a horrible stat but advanced stats have rendered it useless. I’m far from a cultist with the advanced stats crowd but they are very good at highlighting good defensive play, of which Backlund is still excellent.

wait, you are suggesting backlund sign for a 575k pay cut?
isn't Backlund one of the top 25 players in the NHL in the fancy stats?
its one thing to suggest a limited pay increase... i am surprised that anyone would suggest a pay cut however.

Some people are blinded for some reason. Not much you can do to convince them otherwise.

His play has dropped off this year compared to the previous two.
Points are down as well.

Lol no they arent. Do you even look at stats or just make it up as you go?
For the record Backlund is currently on a 52 point pace, 1 off his career high of 53z

I haven't looked, but even if that's true, every players level of play fluctuates from year to year, month to month, even game to game sometimes.
Backlund is not elite, but he's a very good two way NHL center and unless we can find an upgrade somewhere, this team is better with him on it than not, especially at $5 million per or less.

Would love for this to get done during the All Star-break. Then slap an A on his chest and watch him go on a tear for the stretch run.

I stand corrected on his points. I do look at stats but somehow I was looking at the wrong page.
However, his +/- has dropped to -6 this year from +9 and +10 the previous two years. It is one of the stats.
Also, his play has been mixed this year, not as consistent as previous years.
I have watched every Flames game for many years and the eye test says he is having a mixed season this year.
Not as consistent this year as the previous two.
Tonight's "Game Takes" mentions Backlund's inconsistencies as well.
I like Backlund and hopefully he gets back to his usual steady play.

Plus/Minus is still one of the stats and there has been a change this year from the previous two.
He does not go against the league's best every night this year. They have been playing Monahan head to head some games and Backlund in others.

It would be great if this is his "down" season that coincides with his contract year, so he can go back to being his consistent old self when he's re-signed.

this team is not wining with him. he disappeared (as the rest of the team) in playoffs last year. i see no reason for such contract as long as this team wants to be at the top. if we fine with mediocrity pay him.

Cool Factoid: Michael Backlund was once traded for teammate Matthew Tkachuk's dad
