$6, 5, 5 = $16M over 3 years ($5.3M hit).
$6, 5, 5, 4 = $20M over 4 years ($5M hit.
$6, 5, 5, 4, 3 = $23M over 5 years ($4.6M hit)
$6, 5, 4.5, 4.5, 4, 3 = $27M over 6 years ($4.5M hit).
Anything more and the Flames are possibly hand-cuffing themselves and overpaying a guy destined to be on the 3rd, or possibly 4th line, in two or three years.

What in the world. How is this contract not done yet? 5M x 6yrs? If I was GM the contract would already be done.

My guess is the only way we see Backlund playing on the third line before 33 would be from Janks progressing, not from Backlund regressing. Guys with his kinda advanced stats usually can keep it up until their mid 30s. I would bet hes still a tradeable asset at that point.

Well, just like everyone here I do get the "then why isn't it already signed?" reaction, but I do understand the holdup. Lots of factors to consider... bonus structures, upcoming CBA renewal, which years are worth what etc.
The fact that the first known public ask from the Backlund camp being about a full million under what was expected speaks a lot about his dedication to Calgary.
I think this gets signed before the weekend is out.

I'm fine with this as long as there isn't a NTC/NMC in the deal.

Second line offense and 4th in Selke voting last year... $5M x 5yr is very reasonable for Backlund.
Comparable contracts:
Valtteri Filppula - $5M AAV
Ondrej Palat - $5.3M AAV
Frans Nielsen - $5.2M AAV
Bryan Little - $5.3M AAV
Tyler Johnson - $5M AAV
Carl Soderberg - $4.8M AAV
Reilly Smith - $5M AAV
Jori Lehtora - $4.7M AAV
Except for Little and maybe Palat, Backlund is as good or better than all of those players

My guess is it will be full NTC the first few years, with a limited NTC involved in the final 2 years of it. Similar to Brouwer's.
Backlund bleeds Calgary and the Flames and is heavily involved with the local community, it's only right that the Flames assure him some security in return.

If Backlund’s new contract does have an NTC, I bet Vancouver is on the list.

Well this is encouraging. If the first number we are hearing is an ask around $5 million, then it's possible it comes in with a number that starts with a '4'

At $5M you pretty much let him pick the term
I'd say anywhere from 3Y - 7Y is acceptable at that age and price.

Anything under a 6X6 is a bargain.
He could easily get that. Selke caliber two way forwards never come up in UFA. You lock those guys down period.

5x5 with a 10 team no trade would work for me.

i'd love to get him at a 5x5
but outside of Francis saying the ask is closer to 5, i haven't seen any reason to believe it would be that...
based on Boogerz numbers, 5 even seems a tad low.... i mean i think backlund is as good or better than Bryan Little and he makes 5.3M
Personally, I'd be ok at 5.3 x 5 but would prefer 4 years at that number

4.5 6 years
Or
4.8 5 years
Contract can still go south in a hurry.
I don’t want him to be the next Brouwer in a few years.

The way he's been playing lately, 3 years 3 million per. The Flames have enough guys who can't score, do the over pay for more.
