Default Cool coffee shop suggestions for teens/young adults?

Hey, my 16 year old daughter and 15 year old son sometimes sit around with their friends doing jack squat and I find it mildly annoying. Like, go do something.

Anyway, I was telling them about how my friends and I used to hang out at Weeds Cafe in the 90s and - shockingly - they thought that sounded like a good time.

Are there any coffee shops around Bonavista that would work for their age group that are independent and have some personality versus, like, Starbucks, anybody could recommend? Kind of like Weeds or Kettle and Loaf, but in the good end of town.

Just send them to Avenida or South entre and they will find something. At 15 and 16 they should be able to Google this kind of stuff for themselves.

Part of the fun when I was that age was getting out of the burbs. We would take the bus down to Kensington and go to Grabba Jabba or whatever.
Or send them down to 4th street SW. Lots of choices there.
Edit: out in the burbs there really isn't much choice outside the chains.

Deville Coffee near the Willow Park Broken Plate. Analog coffee right inside Southcentre Mall. EDIT: There is also an Analog inside Calgary Farmers Market South.

Wow, Weeds Cafe... that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. Does it still exist?

Yeah, good thinking. Why help the kids, eh?

Or, maybe, I have left it up to them and they didn't find anything so they're sitting around not doing as much as they could, so their loving father stepped in to help them find something fun to do. Like, how - on God's green earth - could you possibly warp that in your mind to be a bad thing.

Your idea of fun for your 15 and 16 year olds is to hang out at a coffee shop?

Any place suggested by a bunch of old guys on a hockey forum is inherently uncool for teens. They gotta find their own place. Coffee shops are great for when they’re a little older to hang out, drink coffee, and rip darts

When I grew up it was Humpty’s. Nothing but coffee and cigarettes. The joys of growing up in a small town.

That's kind of amazing. I didn't spend much time there, but had friends for whom it was practically a second home. It was the most bohemian place I remember ever encountering in Calgary. Glad to hear it's still going.

I would also recommend Analog for the reason that it is a local family-owned business and the owners happen to be long-time friends.

I’ll remember to give them a try next time I’m in Calgary. Looks like they’re expanding to Kelowna as well.

Regal Cat Cafe is nowhere near your neighbourhood but I bet your daughter would be happy to hang out with some cats. It’s now owned by the Meow Foundation - an awesome day rescue foundation.

It’s not super cheap but it’s a good way to spend an hour or two.

Yes?

I mean, not 24/7, but you didn't do that with your friends when you were 16? I thought it was a pretty standard thing to do. Literally the exact same type of activity as going to a pub or bar, except all ages. Go with some girls and guys, play some crib, order a brownie or some chips and salsa...just sort of get out of the house and mingle with other people versus staying inside. Way more fun, it's social, you meet other regulars. Like the Peach Pit or something. It's great when you have a cool hang out spot where you're exposed to different music and neat people.

I'm surprised you'd question it, frankly. Can't imagine what you think the downside is.

Do you have any idea what caffeine does to your blood pressure?

There's also Good Earth in Glenmore Landing if one of your children (and/or their friends) drive. Plenty of seats, too. I think the main challenge they may have is that most suburban coffee shops close up pretty early in the evening. Maybe the mall locations stay open later?

Oh yeah! Glenmore Landing! What you should also do is make sure that they drive a nice, new and very expensive car so by the end of the day it can look like someone took a golf club to it in a fit of drunken rage.

It doesnt matter where you park it the end result is still guaranteed.

If your kids are anything like mine, bubble tea is more of a thing than coffee. There are a couple places in your part of the city. They probably don’t mind teenagers hanging out if they buy something.
