Wow. We had a bit of a goalie controversy brewing at this point of the season. Vernie seemed to be a bit inconsistent at this point of the year. His record was great, but the stats don't lie. He had quite a few games with 15-20 saves while allowing 3-5 goals. I have to think he gets on his hot streak over the next few weeks here, but it's funny to look back and see how well Wamsley was playing during this time.

I have to admit to a tiny bit of satisfaction seeing a major newspaper mis-identify the goalie in the photo caption in this next game. It makes me feel less guilty about my own occasional factual error or typo in these reports that I prepared late one night in my bunker three decades ago.

Alright... I don’t like Edmonton, but that photo of Ranford is kick ass.

Wait! No one is going to mention the picture from the prior EDM game that had MacTavish with a helmet on!? Anyone know the story behind that? I thought he always went helmetless?

Here's the AP story from 1997 upon MacTavish's retirement that covers that (see the last paragraph) ....

As an aside, and I'm searching for the video of this, during the original run of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with Regis Philbin, the March 1, 2000 episode featured a contestant who won $64,000 for answering the following question:

Two of Nieuwendyk's 5 goals are shown in his Forever A Flame tribute
in the following video clip starting at about 2:25

Plenty of confusion here on the first goal as none of the announcers notice that Andrew McBain actually shoots the puck while Hawerchuk is fumbling around

It's remarkable how common trades were back then. More significant hockey trades in Nov-Dec of '88 than there were in the entirety of the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.

Being a young Nieuwendyk fan at that time I remember that game well. I even recall talking about the game the next day with my friend. Obviously because of the big moment this game is easier to remember, but I'm surprised at how many games this season that I recall.

Also, isn't this the 2nd time that Berezan was displeased with his playing time? At least the 2nd time it was mentioned in the media.

No salary cap restrictions (maximum or minimum) almost certainly = more freedom to do what you want with the roster, including on a silly whim

Yep, and as we all know he eventually gets shipped at to Minny--I'm trying not to check when but I think it's pretty soon. Berezan was an interesting player. I think he'd thrive in today's NHL as a solid bottom six guy who could kill penalties, but in the late 80s that type of player wasn't valued nearly as much. Don't quote me on this, but isn't Berezan still pretty active with the Flames alumni? So I don't believe there is any bad blood. Also do not quote me on this either, but I think he actually got a SC ring from the team as well.

Berezan played for the first time in a while, and was traded to the Stars 6 weeks later....nowadays people would say he was being showcased

I just want to say thank you and how awesome to have this all archived in one place will be.

For someone like me who was only 1 when this season was happening it's really interesting to learn about.

Do we know for sure it actually is being archived? Even though I have all the individual pieces easily accessible in a folder, I can't imagine another scenario where I'd put it all together again over a period of time like this.

Watching these old games has been really interesting. forgot how much clutching and grabbing there was. Watching the SCF game 6, if this was todays game, there would be constant fights as todays game there is no hitting without having to fight afterwards. Dont like the clutching and grabbing back then, it was way too much but the physical play would be nice in todays game.
