I guess the GOP doing everything they could to get the majority in the Supreme Court is really going to pay off.

If it happens the social conservative project will have been finalized.
McConnell’s gambit will have paid off.

I'm skeptical. It's a rough draft and not sure the votes are secure. It would be a huge move and a huge risk. Would absolutely energize the Democrats. Federal protections would be gone, all power to the States.
Also they will discover how this got leaked. That never happens.

Based on the demographics of abortion these republicans are creating their own demise. In 18 years they will be crushed by a demographic wave.

Which is why the right is trying to create a minority-ruling authoritarian state. It’s not clear there will be a democracy in the US in 18 years.

No one publishes the leaks. If you read the politico article they say it’s clear the leaks have occurred in the past as they are included in peoples books and articles after cases have been decided. No one publishes leaks before decisions are made.

Republicans are pushing to devolve authority to the states (or restore authority to the states, as they would characterize it). Which sucks if you’re a liberal in a Republican state. But I don’t see how that will hurt democracy in California, Illinois, or New York.

18 years is optimistic. A red wave this year and a GOP win in the 2024 election will more or less ensure that democracy will be gone by 2026.

Nothing is forever Cliff. What if California, Illinois or New York turn red one day. At least with the federal law, there is protection against states going rogue. And this goes for any law, conservative or liberal.

Yeah, forget the gerrymandering, the voter-suppression, the unrestrained and untraceable donations, the propaganda and populism, the abuses of process, and the long list of other ways the modern GOP resembles Putin's Russia.
It's just about state rights and they're fine in California.

Strikes me as pretty obvious as what’s going to happen. Trump tried to start an illegal coup / insurrection and he still had the opportunity to win a 2nd term.
What happens when he literally can never win the presidency again?
States are in serious, deep trouble. I’ve been saying it for awhile, the civil war thing, it’ll happen. Just a matter of time at this point. Likely inevitable.

This is becoming less likely all the time, not more likely. And it was already incredibly unlikely.
This is yet another step to the ideological balkanization that has been a snowball rolling downhill since the 90's down there. It'll only continue to pick up speed as people continue to relocate to states that align with their ideological preferences and those tendencies become all the more entrenched.
Doesn't do much for poor women living in metropolitan areas in the south, regardless.

I find it really, really hard to believe that the GOP with the presidency and congressional power wouldn't fully go the other way though: "states rights" are only important as a practical and rhetorical tool. The minute they could actually outlaw abortion at the federal level, they would. Among myriad other atrocious, medieval acts.

There's something awfully suspicious that's such a decision's draft was so conveniently leaked ahead of time. That almost never happens.
I am curious about the motive.

They have already shown that when attacking Californias car pollution standards. However in the Supreme Court I suspect they don’t win these because both Kavanaugh and Gorsuch appear to have a rather non partisan rulings they just are very much textualists so I’d suspect any anti states rights stuff gets shot down.
For example Texas suing the other states during the election only Thomas and Alito wanted to hear the case.

Someone trying to get someone to change their decision - the motive seems clear. Who it was would be debatable.
