Default Would Wayne Simmonds be a fit for the Flames?

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...ayne-simmonds/

With news coming out of Philly about the potential to move Simmonds, I was wondering what CP thought of him as a potential fit in Calgary? We here about Lindholm (who I do like) and guys like Tavares (Pipe Dream) but I think if the price is right Simmonds would be a fantastic fit for the Flames. Here's why:

1. The flames desperately need help on RW
2. They need a top line guy who can jump start the PP
3. His net front presence is awesome
4. Adds an element of toughness
5. One year remaining on a cheap cap hit contract

Simmonds does have a 12 team no trade clause; however, if the Flames can somehow make this happen, I honestly don't see a better fit for this team.

Thoughts?

No

The last thing I want is the Flames picking up a 29+ player thst has a year left and wants a raise on a 5-7 year extension.

I love Simmonds but worry about his age and potential for decline.

A few years ago yes.

Now? No.

Why? There would likely be a significant price to land him, then he has a year left. After that time he'll be looking for big dollar and term through what will likely be declining years.

The timing and contract situation make it a poor option unfortunately... because having him a couple years ago would have been a great fit. Now, not so much.

Because I generally feel it's worth some discussion during the boring off season in the summer. No need to respond if you don't have anything to add of value

For sure he'd be an excellent fit, but that's not really the issue. The issue is acquisition cost, and I don't think I'd be willing to overpay for a pending UFA.

We don't need any more guys who score most of their goals within 15ft from the net. We have 2 guys in our top6 who are elite at that. We need guys who can shoot, score and generate chances from the dots. I'm talking about shooters like Hoffman, Neal, Kessel type players.

Doesn’t fit the age of the core and vision of the flames being competitive for numerous years in the future. Great player, but just not a fit

I don't think so. At least not long term and at the cost of acquisition Philly is likely seeking.

Short term as a rental for a push? Yeah, I think he could help FW depth immensely.

He would be a great pickup at the deadline if the Flames look like they are contending for the division. But only as a pure rental. Do not want to give term to him.

No.

Doesn’t play a full game. Is turning into a perimeter player just like all aging power forwards who don’t wanna get their noses dirty anymore and behave like their reputation does all the hard work they could and should be doing.

Do not want. But hey......people will be screaming to bring back Iginla again this year for sentimental reasons.

I want this team to win and have players that have complete games to play instead of being career negative players.

If you look at the goals he scores, most of them are in front of the net banging in rebounds on the PP. He is very good at that role but outside of that is not very offensive.

Comparing his PT/60 5v5 over the last 2 years he has dropped to levels below what Bennett is now and is showing signs of declining from his career averages.

Add to that he will need a contract at the end of the year and will be 30. I think it would be a terrible mistake to acquire Simmonds and I like the guy.

This sums it up for me. Love the player but he's gonna get a dumb contract from someone.

If he were cheap, sure, but I think he'll demand a relatively steep price. At this point.
He's about 5 years too old for what tre seems to be working toward in terms of core players.

I always keep going back to SuperMatt18's post as to why the Flames should not trade for Simmonds:

Brouwer before Calgary:

15/16: 39 pts in 82 games - 29 ES points (30 years old)
14/15: 42 pts in 82 games - 27 ES points (29 years old)

Simmonds last two seasons

17/18: 54 pts in 82 games - 28 ES points (29)
16/17: 46 pts in 75 games - 27 ES points (28)

Don't over pay for a guy who is going to be on the wrong side of 30, whose numbers are inflated because he plays for a great PP with talented linemates - much like Brouwer was in Washington and St.Louis.

This isn't the 24-27 year old Simmonds who was a physical force and drove play - much more limited in his skill set now and slowing down from a skating perspective.

This does not describe Simmonds. At all.
