I feel like at this point it's us not wanting to trade Markstrom to NJ in a misguided attempt to make the playoffs

I would guess that depends on Allen. If they view him as the fix to their goalie issues after his play the rest of the year, likely kills NJ as a spot for Marky. This is clearly a plan B / hail Mary at trying to improve their net situation this year to make a push for the playoffs.

If it doesn't work, I'm sure NJ can find a way to move on from this situation and look for a better long term solution in the net - which could still be Marky.

This probably has a bit to do with Vegas picking up Hill and now he is playing like a top 10 goalie. They gave up a 4th to get Hill the ask for Markstrom is Mercer.

Allen did not cost Mercer.

Wonder if it’s a tactic to leak this Plan B to push Conroy to accept an offer.

Otherwise, this feels like NJ is cheaping out and will likely regret it.

Edit: Scratch that, not a tactic. Discount Markstrom indeed.
