Meh, I still don't really see anyone challenging Wright for 1st overall at this point, and therein may be some of the problem.

I wouldn't go that far to say Bedard is a bust.
He has time to mature, but he really needs to get his head on straight & stop drinking the koolaid.
Hopefully having Paddock behind the bench will help with that, similar to what Sutter has done w the Flames.

McKenzie's midseason rankings are now out:
https://www.tsn.ca/shane-wright-nhl-...nzie-1.1748239
Still looks like a very forward heavy draft especially in the 1st round.

not glowing words on Wright by some scouts
Quote:
It isn’t that Wright has been a bust or that scouts are skeptical of him as a high-end NHL prospect. He’s fully expected to be a good NHL player, but the scouts are looking for more great than good from the No. 1 overall pick. Wright’s game this season has lacked any sort of “wow” factor or “dynamic” aspect.
...He’s not played with enough urgency or determination,
...His performance has not been special in any way
...He’s going to be a second-line centre in the NHL.

It’s sounding like Wright is emerging as more of a Hischier prospect - advanced all-around game for his age - than a Matthews or McKinnon consensus 1st 0A.

Sounds like it won't be a bad year to pick outside of the top 10 after all.
I remember when it was about Wright, Savoie, and Lambert. Still all seem like good draft prospects, but they are all being challenged by others now.
Slafkovsky sounds intriguing with his size. Could be physically NHL ready from the sounds of it.

Player I am intrigued by that might be in the Flames draft range is Nathan Gaucher.
Good size, good work ethic, has skill and can put up points, but is maybe not an elite skilled player.
Link has a group of media scouting opinions.

Boy that is interesting. Playmaker would assume hockey iq, with that size and and some real compete. Sounds like a flames pick to me and would look good next to zary down the middle.

I'm not a fan of 1st round forwards who are below a point per game in the CHL (this makes me really question their NHL upside/ceiling), and I'm also not a fan of people who regress their stat totals from one year to the next (development will likely be rocky at best).
But other than that, I like everything about Nathan Gaucher and would happily take him at 45 to 60 OA.

Bit of a teaser and pretty certain midterm rankings update will soon follow.

IMO this would be a good year to trade a 1st rounder.

I dont think so. It's still a strong draft. And the Flames need to keep stocking the cupboards.
Maybe if they're a lock for the playoffs at the deadline and there's a player worth getting, sure. Anything less than a lock for the playoffs though, best to hedge the bets.

good to see two Austrians on McKenzie's list - Marco Kasper at #17 and Vinzenz Rohrer at #80. We had no draft picks at all between 2006 (Grabner and Nödl) and 2020 (Rossi, Nickl and Baumgartner) ... would be cool if Kasper could become another 1st round prospect for us.
Flames need to finally draft an Austrian too, obviously.

Kasper is someone I would be interested in around our spot. Playing in SHL already.

Could it be worth splitting the pick?

I could really see a few of the D being risers on Draft Day, and I would look at Elias Salomonsson, Denton Mateychuk, Kevin Korchinski, and Calle Odelius to move up a bit. These 4 have been pegged to go late 1st round, or second round (with the exception of Salomonsson, who some put in the middle 1st).
For forwards, one name I really like right now is Liam Ohgren. Right now, he has 18 goals and 29 points in 17 games in the J20 league. His 1.71 p/gp is third in that league-phenomenal for a 17 year old. He is listed by EP as being 6'1", he's fast, and has a very high IQ. I've seen him listed in the later stages of round 1, but I am betting that will change.

I could see the Flames going for a defenseman since they haven't picked any in the first round since Valimaki.
Those guys (Salomonsson, Mateychuk, Korchinski, Ohgren and Odelius) could be available where the Flames end up picking.
Looks like Pavel Mintyukov and Owen Pickering could be around as well.

I think the flames need speed and size. That Swedish kid olmgren seems like a good pick. Fast and high iq with production are tantalizing plus 6’1 can be a decent package to carry , just ask iffy. If they don’t go that way the kid like gaucher would be intriguing. Size, RH and offensive or two way ability.
I would love a trade up scenario. Maybe try to land Geekie. He’s cooled a bit but still projects like a top six center with valuable size.
I think this draft will have a lot of value late again as was last years Poole. It maybe not the same objective talent but these kids are going through a tough development path again. So I think people maybe haven’t played they way they could have given different circumstances. In that, I think our scouting staff will find some good value. More players like ruzicka. Man he’s looking faster out there. Scoring with size at center is still so elusive to find. Such a pain in the neck. That was a jack eichel dig. Can’t believe we could beat that offer. Ah well get some value with our assets Todd.
