This seems to be a bid from western Canada instead of Calgary...

It might be the only time we see the feds willing to kick money into such a project.

No one should need to get to Edmonton that easily.

High speed rail line between calgary and edmonton makes no sense. You would still need to rent a car in both cities once you get there. Especially in Edmonton. They have like what? 6 ctrain stops?

In his interview yesterday the mayor was positively giddy over the prospect of the Olympics returning to the City. Has no problem spending another couple of million on further studies. Doesn't seem to care about existing studies that conclude there would be no economic benefit (let alone the risk). Now on the new arena however...

He comes across as a hypocrite in this situation. I guess the arena debate was just to win another election.

BMO Field in Toronto cost like $62 million dollars. Is it so hard to get something like that for the Stamps?

It is when it would be funds that would be competing with a new arena. And then the Stamps situation and the Argos situation is different. Stamps can make due with a renovation to McMahon, Argos didn't have a choice since they got kicked out of Skydome. And even then, they moved to already built stadium for a continental soccer league.

$62 million got them a bare-bones 20,000 seat soccer stadium. Many more millions have been spent to expand it and upgrade it since it was built. The most-recent renovations (for the Argos) were $120 million.

Yup, and I believe the Feds and the Province kicked a lot of taxpayer money into it for the Commonwealth Games.

I wouldn't say he is "giddy"
I also think the rationale behind Nenshi's support is the ability to obtain funds from the province and the feds for the city. The arena is pure city money.
Also, i would argue the studies for the benefits of a winter olympic games are a bit more "positive", or at worst, inclusive, as opposed to arena studies which are pretty conclusive.
However, i certainly disagree with Nenshi's support on the olympics and i too question his reasoning on this and its relation to the arena.

Toronto hosted the Pan Am games in the summer of 2015 and the expansion started in the fall of 2015.

I'm pretty sure mayors the world over are always onside with Olympic bids. It's a huge feather in their cap in terms of prestige, global profile, and legacy.

Yea, its interesting in terms of where he will be in 8 or 9 years. Perhaps he will be one of the provincial politicians helping with the financing. We need one of our own leading the legislature and its been awhile.

So apparently the city is putting the fieldhouse into the Olympic bid and they are adding an ice rink to the middle of the field.
https://www.metronews.ca/news/calgar...struction.html
Quote:
A group advocating for a new fieldhouse for Calgary is concerned that the city is linking construction of the project to a possible Olympic Bid.
Jason Zaran, chair of the Calgary Multisport Fieldhouse Society, said he’d had some previous indication that construction of the fieldhouse could get lumped in with Olympic plans.
He also had hints that the new plans might include an ice rink in the middle of the 400 metre track.
“It was certainly not part of the fieldhouse plans we’d been working on with the City of Calgary to happen right away," he said.
At a council presentation on Monday, the city’s recreation director, Kyle Ripley, accidentally revealed some preliminary estimates about how much would be needed to build or refurbish sports facilities for the potential hosting of a 2026 Olympic games.
The estimate for a fieldhouse with an ice plant was $272 million. The city also estimates a fieldhouse without ice, and without Olympic support, would cost $255 million.
Zaran said the fieldhouse under its current design with no ice surface would be cheaper.
